Loud engine after tune-up

Loud engine after tune-up

Postby losm [OP] » January 28th 2010, 4:47pm

My 03 wouldn’t start in the rain. Took it in and got new wires, plugs & rotor. As soon as a I started driving it away, it was obvious that the engine was noticeably louder, with a rushing sound when I stepped on the gas. It almost sounds like the window is open. Thought perhaps it was me, until the girlfriend got in and asked “what is that noise?” (A jeep owner, she proceeded to bust chops about my disAstro.) Took it back. Mechanics said they could find nothing wrong. Any ideas?

Thanks

They didn't hear the sound or think that it was abnormal?

I'd consider that maybe the air cleaner assembly came disconnected from the throttle body. The mechanic probably removed it while doing the tuneup and removed it again while re-checking it which would make everything appear to be OK from his veiwpoint. Also check the doghouse to make sure that it isn't open. Perhaps the mechanic locked the lower clamps but he didn't tighten down the upper side bolts.

I guess it could be that. But, I think it still boils down to F'n mechanics.

I second this. The "rushing sound" would be from the cooling fan mounted on the water pump. You know, when you speed up, the fan spins quicker.

But sometimes it's more of a hassle to make the shop do something that you could probably fix yourself.

Re: Loud engine after tune-up

Postby Woodweasel » January 30th 2010, 4:12pm

I had loud engine noise when I first bought my van. The guy had installed new carpet and it got between the doghouse and body seal. I had the same rushing sound that followed the engine speed, but not all the time. Think it was just the fan. But anyway, cut the carpet back, reinstalled the doghouse and its quiet inside.
