Fuel pump problems??

Fuel pump problems??

Postby 1992RS [OP] » March 2nd 2010, 7:25am

Well as alot of you know I have been having alot of problems with my astro :banghead: Well I got a little bit of extra cash to throw at it so I went out to the garage to see if I could start her up and do a little diagnosing work. But to my dismay she wont start and from what I can figure it is caused by the fuel pump as when i hit the key the fuel pump is making an awful racket sounds almost like a broken plastic gear grinding against another one, I dont know if there is in fact any thing in there like that but i cant even get a cough out of the engine now so i am assuming when I thought my fuel lines were frozen it may have damaged something in my fuel pump causing it to provide insufficient pressure to the injector(s) i tried it about ten times and didnt even get the faintest wiff of raw fuel from the intake or exhaust. so its time for a new pump or what?? :screaming:

Also previously when i tested fuel pressure with the key on engine off it would get 55psi most the time it would hold there but other times it would go from 55 to 0 in a matter of a few seconds? that i am assuming could be a stick injector or bad pressure reg right

The pressure has to be going somewhere fast. Unless you have had an issue with fuel fouled plugs or raw fuel smell, my bet is the check valve in the pump. Due to this frozen line issue, if you wind up replacing the pump, flush pressure line, replace filter, and check the return line to the tank before installing a new pump. If it is blocked, it could cause the new pump to fail. If this van will start or try to start with starting fluid, then the injector and regulator are probably OK. Keep the pressure gauge hooked up once you put the new pump in and make sure that initial pressure does not spike way past spec.

Well, I definately plan on swapping the pump, do you know where to find an affordable one??
I havent tried shooting in any starting fluid yet but that is now on my list of things to try next. It seems like when i turn on the key or after i try to start it the pump runs for about fifteen seconds to prime the system which before it was like 2-3 then it was 5-7 and so on til now it wont start. also dont know if this makes a difference but when i would be hard on the gas from a dead stop at say a light it almost felt as if it had no power like a 0-30 mph of like 10-12 seconds

Once you have the old pump out, use a flashlight and take a good look inside the tank. Remove any water or debris. If fuel quality is in doubt, drain tank completely and use new fuel.

What makes you think that the fuel lines were frozen in the first place? If they were frozen, you should never have read any pressure.

I ordered a cheapy, I know I shouldnt have but its what I could afford. The reason I thought the lines were froze was that it all the sudden would not start and it had been sitting in sub-zero weather for about 1.5 months with less than a eigth of a tank of gas so I assumed frozen lines especially when I ran my heater in the garage for a few hours it would sputter. but not start only try then die. so I figured oops I let the line freeze up.
