temp not working after swap

Postby 86shorty [OP] » March 9th 2010, 3:41am

Ok here goes.
I have a real nice 86 shorty cargo, the motor went so I found a 91 4.3 for a 100.00 and did the swap. turns out the new motor runs great but I have no temp gauge. I went through the steps out lined in the manual and even replaced the sending unit but still no workee.
any suggestions ??

Cheers
Brian

Which year sender did you use? This is on the drivers' cylinder head, correct?

OK. I was wondering if the replacement sender is compatible with the gauge. When you replaced the sender, was it from the original motor? From the new motor? From the parts store?

Yup the first sender was swapped over from the old motor, so I went to parts store and got a new one. the only difference was the way the wire hooked up it had a diff end but the guy at the store assured me that they are the same.

I should mention that the 91 motor didn't have same sensor, it looks like the one for that one is in one of the frost plugs.

I'm pretty sure the one in the pic is a block heater. The sender I'm talking about is a single wire. Located above that pic on the cylinder head between the spark plugs.

Exactly. The second pic is the temp gauge sending unit. Now we are on the same page. Good pics!

Yeah, what he said. Any chance there is corrosion on the connector? Did you try unplugging and replugging it?

Did any part of the wiring harness get snagged or damaged during the removal or installation?

Did you measure the ohms of the sensor or the continuity of the sensor wire?

Well, considering that the sender grounds itself when its screwed into the head, I'm not sure of it being a ground problem. If it was, the aftermarket gauge wouldn't get a reading either. But at least you know the sender is good.
