How to get better gas mileage??

If your van doesn't have an Info Center or Tachometer, get a ScanGaugeII.
Good advice, but it's only going to work on an OBDII (1996 and later) vehicle. I've yet to see a good system for an EFI OBDI system.

As for the engine running cooler after the install of a new thermostat... if the thermostat is good then that is a good thing. Sometimes when you trace down a problem it's as helpful to know what is not wrong as it is to know what is wrong.

I'd be looking at installing a mechanical heat gauge in the coolant system to double check the engine's heat. Also I'd look at installing a volt meter on the temp sender and install it in the cabin so you can see what's happening as the thermostat opens/closes, if it ever does. That's not hard to do.

In any case, you've got to actually confirm that the engine is running cool, the gauges you're using may be lying to you.

Do you have heat coming out the heater vents?

Sure I can post a pic as soon as my hubby gets home from work in a few hours as he has the van.

Yes, there is heat coming out of the vents..

We rated the gas mileage here lately and we are getting about 11 miles per gallon...and that is interstate driving :( We got better mileage out of it than that just a few months ago...but the van has always ran cool. It ran hotter when we were driving it home when we first got it, at that point no heat came out of the vents, but we realized when we got it home that the was bone dry on fluid. We filled it up and haven't had a problem with that since but it runs at about 125 or a tad lower now.

If it's truly running cool, you could put some cardboard in front of the radiator to block off the air. and see if that helps the MPG.

Has the fan clutch been tested? If the fan is always engaged the fan will always turn. That keeps the engine cooler, as well as robs horsepower.
