ghost changed ignition timing

Postby vulcaninja [OP] » April 30th 2010, 5:49pm

My son brings home the old 1994 w engine astro and says it has no power backfires and has a strange exhaust sound. After replacing some much needed tune up parts along with cpi set, I found that simply turning the distributer counter clockwise fixed it so i put a light on it and put it back on spec at 4 degrees bftdc and all seems well. No code or engine light showed up. Can't figure why that happened.

Was the distributor lockdown tight when you first examined it?

Yeah so tight and alittle rusted I had to spray it with Pb. This ones got me ??? I've owned 4 astros and a G 10 all 4.3l and all problems are pretty minor and fairly easy to diagnose -they're about as complex as a lawn mower compared to today's trucks.

Then, IMHO, it's got to be a problem internal to the distributor....

not very common but did the body of the dist. itself break and allow it to turn? I had this happen on my 4.3 blazer

Broken distributor? Went for a 5mile highway/city test run and all seems fine. wouldn't think a broken distro shaft would allow the engine to run at all but it sure beats out any thought of paranormal activity being the culprit. I'll pop the cap and take another look at it anyway .

Not the shaft but the housing could have broken at some point where the shaft is fine but the housing could slowly turn causing gradual changes in the timing, also the timing chain could have stretched causing the timing to change over time thus far not being noticable until it got pretty bad I would check that first.

I would like to mention that you may want to pull the Distributor and inspect its bronze drive gear for wear. Jim

I guess a good through distributor check would be in order here. Forgot to mention the van only has 111k. My other van(94 w cargo) has 230K with no ignition issues yet. Thanks to all here-great site.

Check the drive gear and distributor shaft relationship and however it is retained. We just had a similar post here by grandamle91 I think. I'm wondering if a roll pin or such is shearing but only turning so far once it fails.
