They Say Things Come in 3's - Waterpump Whine?

So, after locking the keys in the van, it sounds like the water pump could be going - what next?

There is a high pitched whine when the van is in Drive, idling and foot brake engaged (sitting in traffic). This changes/disappears when I rev the engine or strangely when in Park.

My gut says it's the water pump, the sound is coming from the water pump location, so it is either that or the alternator. Do alternators whine? Can the bearings go causing them to make a noise? Or is it the water pump?

Yes, alternaters can make a whine. Best thing to do is have a person you trust

sit behind the wheel with a foot on the brake, while you use a stethoscope to

probe different items up front, in drive, neutral...etc, and so forth. Don't be

too quick to assign any faults before you are 90% sure of what is making the noise.
