Whats compatable?

I was kind of under the impression that for certain year ranges a 4.3l is a 4.3l...right? Anyway talked to a guy today about an engine for my 2000 and he has an 02 S10 4.3l with relatively low miles and runs excellent and the price is good too..but according to his computer its not compatable with an 00 Astro --JUST an 02 Astro in his interchange guide --what would cause them to be diffrent or is he just being difficult becuase too many people try to return stuff they buy without researching properly first ?
I did not think there were any substantive changes to the engine after 99 till 05 when production ceased, am I right ?

the basic engine and heads are most likely interchangeable but maybe the oil pan , fuel system, brackets etc. are different

I believe that in 02 they changed the injectors, 03 they got rid of the EGR valve, they changed the intake manifold, I can't think of any other engine changes off the top of my head.

The injectors I knew about I am running the upgraded spider in the 00 now --that should be plug and play. MY 04 has the same intake as the 00 so unless there are internal diffrence's then I dont know what hes on about an 02 should bolt in an fit the same as the 00 right ? I was planning on pulling the intake any way to make sure the gaskets were up graded to the newer style or even swapping my intake becase the spider is less than a yr old.

Engine is the same. Block heads. Bolt on parts may vary. It works.

Good idea to change the gaskets while it's out and easy to do. You will def be able to make it work and I would use the newer injectors as you already have them and are going to be changing gaskets.

Thats what I thought --I mean maybe the mounts are diffrent --who cares ? Or the fuel feeds the throttle body a diffrerent way or the themostat neck goes the other way --so what? I gather they get alot of stuff comming back looking for a refund after someone tried to make it fit or had no idea what engine went in what car so......maybe just cranky know it all counter guy who knows ?
I know he kept getting Astro and Astra confused and dosent know the diffrence between an S10/Blazer/Jimmy and the later Trailblazer's and refused to admit maybe he didnt know all that much about any Chevy after 1974.

Yeah, I was told that an Oldsmobile Motor wouldn't work in my Pontiac. Both cars were of the exact same platform. The only thing I changed was the power steering pump from the old motor to the new one. That was the only difference. GM does a good job of building modular engines. Heck, you could probably use the 5.7 Vortec Block with old Carbed 350 parts, you'd just have to machine out the hole where the mechanical fuel pump goes along with tapping the bolt holes. I know that's not the case, but it makes more sense to be able to use the basic long block in as many models as they can.

They don't know. Most are not even a good mech. I went through the same things playing with my van. Putting a cam in the engine, and a posi in the rear end. I ended up talking in depth with a guy at summit who hot rodded a S-10. He know alot about them. My van is filled with stuff from a S-10. Ans now a mercruiser. Alot of things interchange.

Pretty sure you'll have to use the upper intake (because of the EGR and the computer looking for it) and possibly some of the sensors from the '00, but everything else is the same. Incuding the mounts. And you definitely want to use the injectors from the '02. Much better design.

Picked it up yesterday finally --looks real nice. At 97,000. its little more than broke in. I already have the later injectors in the 00
worked fine with the original upper manifold.



I was wondering about the exhaust manifolds, and the oil pan--are they the same or were they vehicle specific ?

You definitely got Gen 2 engines in your 95's there. Completely different critter than here in the states in that year.

The exhaust on the side I can see is a Gen 1 manifold and it is the same as my van uses. Oil pans interchange here. I put a van engine in a blazer and it fit.

Gen 1 and gen 2 exhaust manifolds are different the way they hook to the pipe. No gasket is required on Gen 1. Gen 2 uses springs and gaskets. Worth checking out. I would just use the ones on the van already tho.
