Around Christmas, a squealing noise came from the engine area. The sound was constant, but at a lower "RPM" than the engine itself. I checked the belts and put some dressing on them. It went away for a few weeks, only coming back maybe every two weeks or so.
As of 2 weeks ago, it became an everyday thing. The sound would start at over 30 mph and become more pronounced and slightly louder as I accelerated. Now, should I accelerate rapidly, the sound begins anew.
Coming home, the squealing was constant even at idling. Though, it did go away once the van was idling for a minute or so. Any type of sharp acceleration or increase in throttle and the sound picks up again. With it going, I looked under the hood and think that I've found the location. It sounds as though it's coming from the area of the thermostat.
I've had to refill the radiator since it began. Not sure if it's coolant related. There are no leaks coming from the water pump (changed in May-June of last year).
Co-worker thinks that it may be the alternator. Another thinks it may be the power steering pump. Getting a correct charge (have to work at starting the van from time to time. Thought that it might have been just the cold weather) and no steering problems to note. I did have to fill up the reservoir a few weeks ago.
I am stumped and annoyed at the sound. I have a flow-master exhaust and the sound is louder than the van itself!
Anything?
