'03 Safari Engine Case Coolant Drain Plug Location Reference

Postby gastropod [OP] » May 30th 2015, 9:56pm

Posting this just for future reference. I could have used some pics like this when doing the job for the first time, as I am a newbie to all this. Hope this helps.

Here are where the two coolant drain plugs are on my 2003 GMC Safari 4.3l 2WD.
Heads are 14mm*. They may be a non-metric size, but that is the size socket that fit on my drain plugs. I did not have an SAE socket to compare.
They are tapered plugs that appeared to have sealant on them when I removed them.
After removing them, while fluid was draining, I used a screwdriver to poke into the holes, and that freed up some gunk and allowed the fluid to drain more easily. About a gallon (total) drained from both plug holes in the block.

The plug on the right side is located near the starter and engine mount.
The plug on the left side is near the freeze plug and near cooler lines.

Thanks for the pics! I heard a lot about there being a drain plug on either side but didn't know where. In the middle of changing my intake gaskets and may have to continue and do the head ones also which means draining the rest of the coolant, and now I know where they are. Plan on getting rid of the Dexcool also!

Cheers
