Anyone know much about an 06 Express 4.3? New miss.

Figured I toss this out here since nothing gets past this bunch.

Yesterday I drove the work van ('06 Express, 4.3 liter, 135K) from Va Beach to Woodbridge up near DC, 175 miles each way. When I got in the van to come home, it had a new miss at low speed/light throttle. I made it home ok so I stopped at Advance Auto to scan it. I came up with P0306, miss on #6. I pulled the plug, it looks to have normal wear on the electrode, some white on the ground tab, and the gap is .092" ! From what I've read just now about other full size Chevys, the gap is not adjustable? There's nothing on the sticker about it so I'm erring on the side of caution. It's the company's vehicle, not mine, but I do have some influence over the fleet mgr. I called her & asked if the satellite tracker showed anything, she said "P0306 - emissions". Yeah, sure.

Anyway- my plan is to clean the plug, not adjust the gap & reinstall, and try to get it in somewhere for a tune up in the next 2 -3 weeks. The schedule this week is not going to make it easy for me to get it done, I can't be without it that long. Sound like a plan?

whats the gap supposed to be? 060? 092 is too big though, if 060 is the spec then i would make the plug match. Would probably cure the miss. Or put in a new plug.

I Agree .92 reminds me of an old girlfriend. Time for a new one. My 05 is gapped at .60. Should be real close to being the same. Work out some comp time with the boss and do the work yourself. Just my thoughts, Jim

Well, I'm finding a shop for it today. Management isn't wild about techs working on their own vehicles, there was a guy who blew an engine (before my time) claiming oil changes he never did. I just don't want to get stranded halfway home from DC or on the bridge tunnel one of these days.

I agree .092" is one HELL of a gap, that's why I brought it up. If I had the ambition & permission I'd do them myself & just turn in a receipt, but... the company then has no recourse if it goes bad.

Thanks for the link- I'll check it later when I can. Gotta get to work now.

.092? Wowsers! That's a huge gap. Most high voltage ignitions use around the .060" measurement for gaping plugs. How'd that one get out of spec? That's a moot point now, and it should be reset. Did you pull any other plug(s) to confirm the gap?

If the gap is that large, yep, the ignition is having a hard time firing a spark across that wide gap. When new it may have had no problem. Apply a

Management would rather you spend two or three weeks finding a shop to do the work than gap the plug and reinstall it? What's the cost to the company for how the van is running, or any damage it may be doing during this two to three weeks? Sometimes Management is penny wise and pound foolish. I agree with having a company authorized shop do the work...but this is a little on the anal side. :banghead:

Sometimes it's easier to get forgiveness than permission.

.092" ? Dang, I would've set the gap before I reinstalled that plug. No way would it go back with that gap in it.

I've gotten plugs off the shelf that were not the correct gap despite being 'pre-gapped'. I check them all before I install them - there's always at least one out of spec.

so it dont hurt to regap pre gapped plugs i have always heard it'll mess up the spark between the gap if that makes any sense

I could have "gotten away with it" if I had the time to swap plugs myself, I chose not to. It's been raining every afternoon here lately.

To the best of my knowledge, the plugs have never been pulled before. If one was @ .092, the other 5 are likely there too. I was going to regap it, but then I'd have had to do all 6, and still need to replace them. Then I read about the double platinum plugs being set and the gap not changing over the life of the plug(?) so I just brought it in to a dealer today, hopefully I'll get it back soon. I have 2 trips coming up tomorrow and Friday.

I was hoping that cleaning/gapping the plug would buy me some time before having to replace them, my backup is out on vacation. The company has never tried to postpone things like this. This is not a good time for me to work with no parts, tools or manuals(not to mention my junk box!).

FWIW I *ALWAYS* check the gap before installing plugs. I still remember very distinctly my 10th grade shop teacher holding a new plug in the cardboard & cellophane package asking us "Is it gapped?", throwing it on the table, and asking again "Is it still gapped?" (Point taken). I think I just dated myself with that package description.

Jim, thanks for the offer. I went ahead and put it in the shop specifically to avoid that situation.

I'll post results when I get the van back.

As already mentioned, the Gap should be .060" for the 4.3s. You "should" have an emissions sticker under the hood that lists the plug gap (mine does anyways). My suggestion here is to make sure who ever does the tune-up uses Delco parts, anything else could very well create a lot more problems down the road. As mentioned as well, use at least a Platinum plug and nothing less with the mileage you drive.

Running like that is hard on the motor as it isn't running the way it should which I'm sure you know, if you can take some time out as you have mentioned would be a very good idea. My suggestion is do a complete tune-up and not just the plugs. You may "squeeze" by just doing the plugs, but with the mileage you have on it, it's going to be due soon anyways and you will be good for another 100,000 miles if you do.

I'm sure you know by now Big_kid how important "Preventative Maintenance" is when using your truck for business. If you don't have a truck, you don't have work, simple as that.

Food for thought.

$641.82 . Diagnostic, plugs, wires, cap & rotor at the dealer. I knew a dealer would only use Delco parts.

I searched, I even had my neighbor look for the underhood sticker- nothing about the plug gap. Just "no adjustments".
The ONLY reason I was going to try to squeeze by is because one guy is on vacation this week and another guy is out next week(there's only 3 of us). Lucky for me, the boss said to double up in my buddy's truck & run that way. This is just more proof of I can't remember who's sig line: There's good, cheap, and quick. you can only have two.

Thanks for the input and offers- it is appreciated.
