Misfire under (gentle) acceleration

Misfire under (gentle) acceleration

Postby darwindustbin [OP] » July 13th 2010, 11:57pm

Hi, Please help a newbie!!

A little about the van - it is a 1996 Tiara Royal Star day van. 4.3L AWD. It is showing 68500km on it. It has air bag suspension on rear and i have added a tow hitch as i tow a 24 foot caravan with it.
It has just had an LPG conversion on it in the last 2 months to try and make it affordable to run. Fuel here is about £5.00 a gallon ( about $7.50 at todays exchange rate) LPG is half that.

It was imported from Japan into UK so it spent the first part of its life there.

Now for my problem. It was runnning fine even after the conversion - i used it on a 600 mile holiday towing and blew the plastic part of the radiator. (drivers side)
Had to wait a week to get one in from the USA - we have a good import company that seem to know a little about the vans.
Changed the rad - put it back together and now it misfires or stutters under gentle acceleration or when cruising at a fixed speed.
Have so far changed plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm, oil, filter, air filter.
Water pump has just decided to rust through the back plate of it and have today finished replacing that also.

I have checked it on quite a good code reader i have bought and no codes are showing. What should the timing show as the diagnostic machine i have gives a list of live data. Shows about 20degrees retard at about 600rpm?

Please help as it is now driving me mad - is it time to individually run through all the sensors? Is it vacuum pipes? (feels like timing is off)

Please help a poor bloke in the UK with not many of these around

Many thanks
Cheers
Paul

Is it possible that the TPS sensor became wet when the radiator blew? Did coolant spew all over the engine? Did the engine overheat?

What is the parameter on the code reader for this reading? 20 degrees advance is the factory spec.
What is the model of the code reader? Does it show misfire counters?
Overall, sounds like a vacuum leak.
The price of paying attention is cheap considering the alternative.

Thanks for trying to help!
To answer questions - the engine did not over heat - barely reached 100degrees centigrade and water was coming out of the front of the rad into the grill area - have just pulled the sensor and seems fine.

The code reader is a Maxi Diag us703 by Autel - it does seem to have a misfire monitor/ counter.

As an extra i have had the egr off to clean that and it was fine.

Is it likely to be the distributor gear as i have had that out today and the teeth are slightly worn?
Cheers
Paul

Well,

I have fixed it which is good - not sure how which to my mind is bad as i may not have found the fault.
I did however replace every even remotely looking worn vacuum hose so may be that was it!

I do really appreciate every ones input and believe me i will be on here quite often im sure as there just is not the wealth of expertise over here in the UK on these vans that there obviously is in the US

Thanks Again
Cheers
Paul
