Engine info needed

Engine info needed

Postby Wissy [OP] » October 10th 2010, 2:28pm

Hello, I am in the process of changing my engine in my 98 AWD safari because it is knocking badly. I have done research on the v8 swap, I have a 94 astro with the older style v6, what I need to know is can I take the older v6 and dress it up with the vortek v6 stuff? or should I simply leave the older v6 the way it is? I ask because I have not decided on v6 or v8 because I am considering the v8 swap for another cleaner safari i have my eye on.

please any help would be really apriciated.

That is a tough question Wissy.

More than this typist can answer.

Someone will be along shortly though.

There ARE differences in the long block's internals, however, as long as you swap all the sensors and induction system. it should work. You may have to buy a new timing cover so you have a place for the Crankshaft Position Sensor. ( It's not recommended to re-use one, even on the engine it came from ,if you remove it). I'd swap the heads as well, I'm not sure if they will or will not work with the later intake. Hopefully someone that's ACTUALLY done this will come in with more info. Keep us posted! :D

My boss and I had the same question. (95 RWD into 98 AWD) We decided not to. The intakes won't swap is the real kicker, the 95 has 12 bolts to hold the intake on, the 98 takes 8 bolts. Oil pans are different, 95 is stamped, 98 is cast. The starters are different part #s so the fly wheels might not interchange. Distributors are different. Wiring harness not the same. Just too much monkeying around, and there might be things we haven't seen (roller lifters? crank sensor?)

I see rev_les is quicker than me

Ok, I guess ill make this my build post. I will post pics as I swap the v6 for a v8, I have done v8 swaps in 240z cars so I know what I am up against, and know this will be allot more simple then a 240z swap. :?

I have a 97 truck engine with everything I need, just not too certain about the cast oil pan hitting the front diff ishue??? can someone who has done a 98 or newer awd v8 swap give me some direction on the oil pan, also, where is the best deal on awd mounts? I dont see them on the JTR site,

Todays pic as of 5pm, I have owned this van for 36 hours now, it is my 4th astro/safari so I do have some spare parts. :D

Are the heads from the 98 in decent shape? If so, it is possible to swap them on the 94 block even though it doesn't have the balance shaft. I managed to find a few stories about people who ran setups like this on early 90's S10s in order to gain the benefit of post-2000 roller rocker heads, just as I did when I swapped my 98's heads to some from a 2000 4.3l.

The Vortec intake won't work on the 94 heads, but it'll doubtless all bolt up just fine if you invest the $60 in a Fel-Pro top end gasket set, swap the heads, and bolt in the 94 block. I imagine the performance would actually be slightly better than one with a balance shaft since the rotating assembly's moment of inertia would probably be a little less without that heavy weighted shaft flipping around in the oil valley. Perhaps the older crankshafts/pistons are a little heavier though, I'm not sure.

Unless he has a TBI, his '94 has a balance shaft (my '93 CPI does). Just an FYI.

for what it's worth, the starters interchange on all of 'em. ( I robbed an 87 305 starter off an engine I have in the shop and put it on my '95 'Stro) They look different, but the gears and bolt patterns are the same. ( sorry it took me so long to post this, I've been extremely busy lately) :D

Yep, my mistake. For some reason I thought the balance shaft was a blanket change in '96, and I dunno where I got that from. Still, I think swapping the heads is probably the simplest and most cost-effective option.

If you just take the short block, and build it out with everything else off the later model engine, seems to me also like the shortest route.
