1993 intermitent stall

1993 intermitent stall

Postby jakester7711 [OP] » February 13th 2016, 12:55pm

This is a head scratcher to me. My 1993 safari was sitting for years ( that's why I bought it it 110.000 miles) the fuel pump let go and the guy who owed it got a new vehicle from his company. I replaced the fuel tank and the pump to include the relay for good measure. I also replaced the EGR and The TPS. New air and fuel filters oil change ect.
After I changed the fuel components the check engine light would come on and it would not die but act like it was starving for fuel. The engine was still running but I couldn't throttle up. I would pull over to the side of the road and sit for a few minutes and it would start up and take off as if nothing happened. 50 miles down the road more or less it would happen again.
I replaced all the vacuum lines ( which looked good in the first place) and it still happened. Heres the kicker. After having to endure this for several months I came to realize several things.
No check engine light
It would only happen when the air temp was above 70 degrees.
I could put it in neutral , coast, turn the key off for five seconds and be on my way.
I am open to suggestions? I really don't want to keep buying parts.
Did I mention I was in fla? Its been in the 50s here at night and not close to 70. Vehicle ran perfect.
Any ideas would be welcome.
thank you

The over 70 deg thing makes me think coil,
gets hot and fails. The fact that it restarts is confusing.
Have you replaced the plugs , wires, cap and rotor?
The distributor often wears and causes us grief too so check that for play, if it moves more than 1/16" it's too much.

forgot to tell you the coil is brand new. I had to have it towed off a major intersection one day. And the cap rotor plugs , even the wires are. no play in the shaft. Like I said over 70 . I have been doing some research. perhaps my cat is going bad. Did sit a while. The tires were dry rotted and had to be replaced.

malfunctioning ignition module? But before you start buying parts to throw at it diagnose the parts. As I always mention check out this site. It has a lot of simple and good testing procedures.

well we will find out tomorrow. installed a new ignition module. Temp will be at almost 80.
Thanks for the link by the way it was helpful for me to find out what each part does. It was what lead me to make that decision.

Glad to help. Here's hoping it works. As a professional technician for a lot of my career I replaced lots of GM ignition modules for overheating issues. The symptoms were the same. Let us know how it goes.

Left the house at six am. Ambient air temp 64. Drove 48 miles to work at close to 70 with no issues. Let it sit for close to six hours. Dove same way until I was almost ten miles from the house. BOOM! happened again. Shifted to neutral, turned the key off counted to five and whammo! started right up. Well at least I know its not a IGM.
Man this is driving me crazy.
I just cant understand why it works perfect after a brief shutdown.
Still open to suggestions.
Thanks for the try though.

When did you change the coil and what brand is it? I've had several new coils bad right out of the gate. It almost sounds like a bad wire somewhere with being able to start a few seconds later. None of the 5 Astro/Safari's I've owned have ever done this. But I've changed many coils. I wish I had an idea to throw your way.

I don't know the brand of the coil or the fuel pump. I had it changed at the napa service station. I was towed when I shut down on A major way once and it was replaced about two months ago.
And yes I have a heat gun.
I went through the van with a fine tooth comb. No wires frayed loose nothing. My temp gauge doesn't work but I haven't over heated ever .
strange huh?

I have never had the opportunity to try it as I am always in a situation that requires that I don't get killed by on going traffic but thank you.
I have decided to let the boys with bigger toys than me decode this issue.
I am very tired of fighting this battle.
I asked them not to hit the national debt.
I will post the results so someone out there with a similar issue may find a use for it.

There is one and it is part of the TBI. They are pretty fool proof and don't usually go bad,. So you got to make a custom inline tap to test pressure.
Fuel filter is usually the issue on a TBI if there is a fuel pressure issue.

If it is just turning off when you say shutting down. I be checking the fuel pump ground and its wiring. Or the coil.

What I mean is it loses its ability to accelerate. I can mat the pedal and it just bogs down . If I release the pedal it continues to idle. I shift to neutral and turn the key off for five seconds and then restart it runs normally.( for a little while anyway) As I say though. It only happens in warm weather. Over 70 degrees. Here is south west Florida it was around the upper 60s with very low humidity for a week, the van ran fine. Once it hits 70 . You know the rest.
Thank you for your interest and input

Replace the temp sender for the computer. The one in the front near the thermostat housing. It is cheap and not hard to replace.

It is a temp related issue so replace the part telling it what temp it is.
