98 Astro Van looses brakes when turning

Postby RaspRoc [OP] » June 22nd 2017, 1:01am

When I am turning right and braking at the same time my brake pedal won't depress allowing me to stop. Instead i feel a metallic rubbing sound with little thumps in it. So then there is panic and frantic pedal pushing which usually works. But only after pushing really hard. I might even jerk the steering wheel back to center a bit in an attempt to get the brakes going. It is very intermittent and there have been a few times where this would happen when not turning.

I replaced the power steering pump. It was then that I noticed the power steering reservoir is always empty. I fill it up and drive it for a bit and then check it later and it's empty. I can't find any leaks, but it does make the grindy whining noise when turning hard either direction. It's not difficult to steer.

So now I'm thinking it's the hydro booster. Any advice or solutions are welcome. I am also wondering if a hydro booster from a different model vehicle would work . I can't find a junker to pull a part off of.

Thanks ya'll.

Sounds similar to an issue I've been researching a lot lately. I don't know this for a fact but read if you find fluid around firewall where hydroboost enters that is a good sign it is the issue. Not sure if this is inside the engine bay or cab side, but looking will be easier than replacing to start with.

Fluid is going somewhere. Did you check all your wheel cylinders? Pads could also be soaked.

Don't buy used brake parts dude, sheesh.
