2000 Astro AWD abs light at startup.

2000 Astro AWD abs light at startup.

Postby asrooster8100 [OP] » February 21st 2021, 5:07pm

When the van is first started the abs light comes on immediately. When you begin to drive the brake light also comes on. I also have no speedometer when this is happening. When the temp outside gets above 50 degrees everything seems to be working fine. Also, when I try and pull abs codes I get a link state error so I can not get the codes from the abs.
I have pulled the abs module and resoldered connections but am still getting the same symptoms. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

What are you using to read codes? Typically you would need a TECH2 or similar to look at BCM codes like that.
It sounds to me like a flakey wheel speed sensor; is it AWD?

I am using a harbor freight scanner that reads abs codes. I do not have any issues getting codes from my other 2000 astro. I feel the abs system is not getting power. I tested for power at the abs module and I am getting 12v at the 2 pin connector with the heavy gauge red and black wires, but I think this only powers the motor but I am not sure as I do not have the wiring diagrams for the van. It is AWD with the np233 transfer case conversion.
Thanks

So, lets get you the wiring diagrams first. The GM techline eSI is the digital factory service manual. It will have all of the diagrams and repair instructions for your van(see links in sig).

I also have a page there about setting up virtualbox. Other than downloading the .ova and virtualbox, should take less than 10min to get set up.

If the module isn't responding, it's an issue with the power/ground or communication wiring or the module itself.

The speedometer issue could be a few things, when it goes out do you still get a reading from the OBD2 for speed?

I am having issues downloading the files.
I am not getting speed reading from the obd2 as well. The weirdest thing is that if the temp outside is above 50 degrees everything works perfect. I am suspecting bad solder connections in the pcm but am trying to eliminate as much as possible before going that far.

Thanks

I believe the ABS light and brake light on together is the classic symptom of ABS module solder joints with cracks. And when temp changes the joint "heals". I did the DIY solder joint repair and it's been good ever since.

I have already performed the solder repair on the ABS module with go luck. It also doesn't explain no speedo and shifting issues.

Thanks

No speedo and shifting issues point to a bad ground to me.

I am thinking possibly ground as well. I am just hoping to get a hold of some diagrams so I can start to troubleshoot this thing.

A bad speed sensor/connector/wiring can also cause shifting issues.

That is common with virtually all ABS issues on vans that have dynamic rear proportioning as it requires the ABS to be functional.
