E-Brake Service - How To?

My emergency/parking brake isn't holding. According to what I've read in the 2003-2005 models with 4 wheel disc brakes, the e-brake is self adjusting. This is consistent with my observation that there is no way to tighten the e-brake cable. If it doesn't adjust you need to service the system.

I pulled a rear wheel and it is the funkiest e-brake system I've ever seen. There is a small brake drum cast into the center of the brake rotor, around the hub. There is a miniature drum-brake system for the e-brake. Has anyone serviced or rebuilt one of these?

I'm looking forward to any advice given on this topic. I have the same system and need to service mine also. Probably this weekend.

A mechanic friend of mine said to drill a hole in the backing plate while I had it apart so the star wheel could be adjusted manually without removing the funky disk-drum, and you would also be able to back off the shoes if they had worn a groove in the drum.

My brother has that same system on his Tahoe. Have to replace the disk/drum deal. The E-Brake wears out long before the regular brake.
We did it once and it wore out in a few years. Regular brakes last forever. Just another marvel of new tech being better.

Looked around a under the van a bit more. Found that there is a connector where you can take up slack in the cable. Very easy to do. Should help the e-brake a bit.
