Just some Hydro boost info

Just some Hydro boost info

Postby 4POINT3GMC [OP] » January 29th 2015, 8:06pm

I heard this from a GM mechanic that:

1.Raising the RPM above 2500
2.Turning the steering wheel all the way left or right.
3. Stabbing the brakes

Are all normal during driving situations, but if the three are combined it will snap the power steering shaft every time.

Mine snapped during an impromptu "donut" in the snow....instantly no brakes, no power steering.

Lesson learned... :banghead:

So, I don't completely understand hydroboost. And...why would it "snap" the shaft? What shaft?
How many sensors, fuses or computers does a Bw4472 need? Zero.

i dont like my hydroboost setup. i find it quite lacking and trouble prone. i dont find it any better than the old style of vacuum brakes and normal power steering.

i do not see the advantage in it.

Advantage ? Is there enough room under the bonnet as it is ?

Yes, the shaft will snap when the three conditions are met...

My 93 has 325k mi on the original hydroboost, and it still works

just like the day I bought it back in 94 with 25k mi, thank you.

I'll bet very few people experience the need to ...

yep I believe that's the reason for it, as real estate is at a premium under the hood. I just live without doing donuts any more in that car...when mine broke the serpentine belt actually held the spinning shaft and pulley in the normal place so it was a bit confusing to track down....

My 95 had a snapped shaft when I bought it.

Got it for super cheap because of it.

But yes, try not to drive in such a way that you snap the shaft like that. I believe silverbullett broke his doing the exact same thing.

But chances are the shaft was already cracked.
