Brake Pedal excessive travel

Brake Pedal excessive travel

Postby crankshaft2 [OP] » December 7th 2010, 3:14am

After hitting a slick spot with my 97 Astro rwd, the antilocks kicked in for a second or two, then pedal went most of way to floor. Pumped up but it didn't restore to only partial pedal. Got home, checked for fluid leaks, none. Checked master cylinder full. Checked PS resovoir, down some, topped off. Still pedal went most of way to floor. Once to bottom, still had brakes. Removed rear drums, no leaks. Double checked all brake lines, no leaks.
Read about failures of BMPV devices on this site. Sounds expensive. Talked to my mechanic, he said servo valves can stick after non use, and since it was first time this season when anti locks kicked in, might try gently tapping cast housing, and see if servo would return to normal brake position. Next day it snowed, so I took a test drive on ice and hit brakes hard to reengage anitlocks thinking might loosen up servos. No luck. Any help out there>
Thanks in advance.

This may be worth a try if your PS fluid and brake is nasty like mine was. But I was on the brakes slowing down for a red light and hit a hard bump in the road after that it would still stop but the pedal was going to the floor. So I checked everything, no leaks and adjustment was good. I ended up flushing PS fluid and brake fluid and now my brakes are than ever since i've had it. It took a gallon of brake fluid to get mine clear and I've already ran 2 gallons of PS fluid through it. Its clean now but not 100% yet. Also had our blazer do the samething a few week ago but the bottom of the brake reservior was full of black sludge crap.Forgot be sure to clean out reservior with paper towels or something just dont let it run completely out of fluid

Last post on this page is how I flushed my PS

EDIT: dont know if it made a difference but i also replaced all 3 rubber brake lines after flush, But i didn't replace them on the blazer and it brought the pedal back up.
