Shifting from reverse into drive causing steering issues

Shifting from reverse into drive causing steering issues

Postby Fenster [OP] » July 5th 2018, 7:39pm

Hi All,

I'm wondering if anyone might know what's happening here. From time to time, when I'm trying to park my safari or reverse it out of a spot, the steering seems to lock on me. It gets extremely stiff and difficult to turn the wheel. This can last for up to a couple of hours afterwards. If I've got my foot on the gas and giving it some power, the steering tends to loosen up again but once I'm going slow, it goes back to being stiff again. I think it might be when I shift from reverse into drive and press on the gas before it completely shifts into gear. Would this affect the steering? If so, what's the fix for it?

if the steering is getting stiff check the power steering fluid or maybe your PS pump is bad

This doesn't feel like it's getting stiff though. It feels more like it's almost completely jammed. Only happens when I'm coming out of or into a parking situation where reversing and driving are involved. Do you think that would be a power steering issue rather than a transmission issue?

I've checked and changed the power steering fluid.

almost certainly a PS issue, and not a trans issue. when the pump goes out and doesn't create pressure, there is no assistance. and with this wonky steering setup these vans have, it becomes very hard to steer. if power assistance comes back with RPMs then its definitely a pump issue.

My vote is the PS shaft sheared off inside the pump

with the sheared shaft the steering never comes back though. my bet is a failed pressure regulator and its a coincidence it happenes when it does. low speed idle and shifting the engine around on likely shot motor mounts moves something in the pump and shuts off the flow in the regulator

he says that if he gives it gas that it does come back a little bit

And it will only do that for so long. eventually the 2 pieces of the shaft will be smooth enough not to catch each other any more. My last van had that problem. Even with rpms it would not work at all. imagine my surprise when I went to pull the shaft, the pulley came off, with the shaft attached to it still.

Yeah, it might be time to take it to the mechanic and ask him/her to take a look at it. It's been going on a while now and it's pretty scary when it happens as I can't steer the car properly for a while until it goes back to normal.

how have you ruled out a belt problem? perhaps is getting a drip of some type of fliud thats built up in a spot that reversing casued that spot to drip right onto the pully groove and then after a while the belt smears it into nothing and then it grips again.

belts can slip without making any noises too so it may not even be a contaminant on the pulley.

Edit: also, is it happening when only @ full lock? Ive noticed odd behavior on some PS pumps @ full lock only.

Get under it and see if anything is interfering with the drag link/look for rubbing/clean spots/interference. When it locks up, safely put the front up on stands and see if you can determine where the problem lies.

I'm not sure if it's happening at full lock. I wouldn't be surprised because as I said, it only tends to happen when I'm parking the vehicle which is when it would be in a full lock.

Thanks to everyone who helped out. I just wanted to update y'all since you took the time to reply. I took it to our mechanic. He told us that there's a leak in the hose of the power steering. Hoping it's a simple enough fix. Thanks again everybody.
