Power Steering Pump Replacement

Power Steering Pump Replacement

Postby WakkoWarner [OP] » October 27th 2020, 11:44pm

Decicded to change the power steering pump out today, now that the weather is nice again (it started leaking about 6 months after I installed a new steering gear, new hydro-boost unit, and new pressure/return hoses). The fluid that came ouf of the hoses/lines was extremely clean. So, I just installed the new pump, added some fluid, primed the pump, added some more fluid, bled the system, then away I went. It is working fine and no noises (the old one would make some noise when under stress - not a whine, but a sound you could definitely hear) - the new one is quiet.

The biggest problem is getting the fan/clutch assembly removed. I ended up renting a tool from Autozone that did the job, but I would really like to have the correct tool(s) on hand. Does anyone know if the Lisle 44180 will fit the hold spread on the Astro water pump pulley (the pulley has four holes in addition to the 4 bolt holes in it)?? Also, is the fan clutch nut/hub 36mm??

I am think about purchasing either this kit from KD or a wrench that is 32mm/36mm, along with the Lisle tool:

If you do it all the time it's probably worth the cost of the tools and that one CopperFiremist listed is the bees knees(though I would buy a quality piece like a Lisle https://amzn.to/34zVhxE that is going to last, lots of el cheapo replicas will start to spread).

If you just want a holder, you can get them for like $10-15 or make one with scrap of this design https://amzn.to/3jAcUS5 Jegs or Summit has it cheap but I forget which one it was, if you aren't in a rush you can add it to your next order that qualifies for free shipping.

I just use my largest adjustable wrench and wack it with a mini sledge. If it's ever really hard and you are replacing the water pump, a quick tap on the edge with an air hammer takes care of that.
