Steering Wheel and brake pedal shudder / vibration

Steering Wheel and brake pedal shudder / vibration

Postby mmxchamp [OP] » October 12th 2012, 5:18pm

So I'm new to Chevys, but my girlfriends Astro has issues with the steering wheel and brake pedal. When you press the brake pedal hard it will shudder / vibrate. If you let up on the pressure a bit, it ususally keeps the van stopped and the vibration lessens but you can still feel it a little in the pedal. If that makes any sense! lol.

At the same time, the power steering works but when turning the wheel too far while parking the whole engine kinda shudders (or feels like it at least). Does this van have Hydroboost? If so, I'm assuming some diagnosing of the power steering system will be required...I prefer not to throw parts at problems.

Thanks for your help!!

Hooray to hear that!

If your power steering fluid reservior is a seperate can mounted on the firewall it's hydroboost. If the fluid goes into the pump instead, it's vacuum boost. Sounds like yours is hydro, to which I'm stupid. But others aren't. May we assume that your PS and brake fluid levels are ok? Does the van idle ok? Any fluid leaks around the brakes or hoses? Leaks around the PS pump or steering gear?

Hi Lumpy, thanks for the help!

I'm pretty sure it has the separate reservoir; but I've only looked in there twice. I'll confirm when the van gets home today. Hopefully she brings the girlfriend home with her :-P

I checked the PS and brake levels 2 weeks ago and all seemed fine; its been making the noises "forever" according to the driver. Van idles fine as long as no brake pedal or steering while use is happening. I didn't notice any obvious fluid leaks, but I'm planning on cleaning it all off well tonight and then seeing if I notice any leaks. I too have never seen hydro up close and personal (I've only owned Fords) but from what I understand the hydrobooster does both PS and brakes.

Mine has hydro and when you push the pedal the engine will bog down because the pump is pulling hard on the motor. As far as the vibration mine did that when there was air bubbles in the system

Sounds like a bad set of rotors. If there's not shake till you hit the brakes,I'd go with a new set of rotors. Replace your brakes while your in there. As for your p/s sounds as something is binding. If you go hard over and it kicks back alittle your going to the edge of its limits. It's just letting you know. It could be a good idea to drain your p/s fluid and put in some fresh fluid.

That's correct, the brake pedal vibrates when you're sitting still. I've had warped rotors on a different vehicle, definitely not that.

I took a look at the reservoir and the fluid is full. It is definitely a hydro boost; are all Astros hydro boost? I'll try to get the air out of the system tomorrow morning and see if that helps. If not, I guess its replacement pump time?

I pull the hose that runs down the pump off and let it drain, You didn't say what year yours was but with that hose off and engine off turn the steering clock to clock couple times and reconnect the hose, refill, start engine turn the wheel couple more times check fluid

If you've got a right angle drill or air ratchet, drain the PS pump by disconnecting that hose, disconnect the serp belt, put a socket on the front of the pulley and power drain the thing. Quickie Wickie.

I keep finding more and more uses for that air ratchet.,,

Well I'm unfortunately without an air ratchet or 90 deg drill. I gravity bled everything, and refilled and tried to get the air out. Still seems like there are air bubbles in it, see the last pic once get them attached.. Also have a video of the noise, I'm uploading it to YouTube now.

The fan blade spins free by hand, so I think its OK. The PS fluid was free of bubbles, but when I started it up and spun the wheel size to side a few times there were bubbles in the reservoir again...seems like the pump is creating air.
