Steering Wheel not turning properly

Steering Wheel not turning properly

Postby lilpig [OP] » March 13th 2013, 12:57am

Van started doing this about 2 years ago. Not sure why.

My mechanic noticed it one day and it stumped him. He said there was some kind of sensor in the steeling column that is bad but I have not been able to find any info about a sensor in the column.

Anyone know what this is? Please help if you can.

Hmm.....thats weird. How is your power steering pump? No noises? Notice issues with your brakes?

Steering pump seems to be fine. Fluid looks good and is up to level. No noise.

Brakes are fine. I have changed them over the last 2 years several times and it's not had any impact on steering.

How is you front end alignment? That is what should kick your steering back to the center. Have you had your camber and toe-in checked?

I had to watch the video twice, I thought you were stopped, but in gear the first time I watched it, the second time thorugh the moving reflections in the mirror gave it away. I'm going to agree with Drummernaut, get the alignment checked, I'm guessing your camber is way out of whack.

For the wheel to keep turning like that it is the steering box. For what ever the reason it is over assisting.

Metering valve in steering box is bad. There is a Rotary valve inside steering stem/box that directs the pressurized fluid in the diection of the turn and SHOULD Stop the fluid from flowing when the wheel stops turning.
Looks like that what's happening in your video, the rotary valve is just staying open n not shutting off flow from pump.

Here is a Good link to a web site so you can see how it suppose to work.

Also don't try to remove the pivot arm under the van, remove the connecting knuckle at the center link and then remove steering box from under van, then remove the pivot arm.

The whole box is the best n easiest. I don't think a DIY rebuild kit will include the parts you need and they are probably pressed on the main shaft anyway.
I just replaced mine last monot and got shell shock the Core replacement charge was $6 more then the new replacement. Core $ 185 n part was $ 179, So take your out first then go get a replacement and swap on site.

K. I can do that.

I just had it aligned. Will I have to do it again? Is there a way to avoid that?

No, the main pivot arm has a spline groove gap that can only be put on in one place and the steering wheel knuckle is the same way. Just make sure the steering wheel is straight and the front wheels too.
