We already have a shoutbox. Same principal as a chatroom. Not divisible, and one jumbled mess. I don't think that type of decorum is what we are seeking. Does that sound like an organized off topic area to you?

Don't explain it poorly 5 times. Take the 15 seconds to go out and take a picture of it!!
Please do not confuse idle conversation with technical advise

Just envision all of the Off Topic threads, thrown in one chat room. Chaotic...

One thing that happens on one of the other car forums that I am on is when a chit-chat topic seems to be getting too far off track and away from the purpose of the forum in the first place, a moderator will give a final comment and then lock/close the thread. Maybe that would be the best way to handle it.

 Well, then post something "constructive" instead of an off-topic subject.

I'm glad that it seems everyone is on the same page. Rev brings up a good point about how some people might interpret a member with a higher post count as a member who "knows his/her stuff". I'm not sure that is the situation here since we have so many people that contribute (and cover each other's butts).

And I can understand that viewpoint but I really don't like locking threads. Although I feel its restrictive and like censoring, I just don't care to alienate anyone. We have a great group of members here that "almost" seem to moderate themselves, much like now.

I havent been on the site for to long. I was amazed that someone else liked Astro's! And the amount of information available was amazing!!!!! The willingness of the members to help someone they dont know is something that doesnt happen to much any more. When you have a problem and post it here, you can be damn sure someone out there has done it, been there or has watched it done and is willing to try and steer you in the right direction. "Off Topic" posts.... To me its like a bunch of guys sittin around the job talkin trash and havin a good time on a break.

The "Numbers Game"... cool. Its fast and painless and interesting.
"One word reply"... OK. Its getting stale. Was kinda fun reading the combination's put together.
"Show your snow"... Cool. ITS SEASONAL!! It will end soon!!

I dont know guys. I really dont see a big issue with loosing members. It's enjoyable watching people having fun. I mean...All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Like Astroturf said.... if "Off Topic" posts bother you, then why are you reading them ? Drama!!!!

In regards to those who post in off topic to boost post count, this is the first forum I've been on that posts in off topic and forsale add to your post count. I enjoy off topic sections in forums as its generally common interests were all into vans and post things that interest us.

Its easier for someone to post something random then it is for someone to post something dealing with an issue. I don't have a technical/mechanical background if you got rid of off topic I would only have something to post when I had a question or when I needed to find a part. That leads to much less activity on the forum since most questions have been discussed already and many threads just have links to other threads. at that point this becomes a repository of knowledge as no one would be looking for new questions, have an issue hop on check the old forum find the issue and not come back for another month till your van breaks down.

we're in a transitional season right now. no one is really starting any new projects as winter is coming to an end but were not in BBQ and cruise in season yet either. Off Topic section can help keep a car/truck/van forum stay active with the spring slump. Once we get out of the garages we will start noticing things that need fixing or break something and be turning wrenches and asking questions soon enough. Until then enjoy the diversion from the norm have some fun with it and relax we will get back to business soon enough.

Tiny-my point is kind of direct.Much of the questions here are repair in nature.Repairs really don't have a season. It is a common in any car/van forum to have a number of users who just pass threw once or twice to find info for their repair.

I'm not trying to detract from your point as direct as it may be. My thinking is that of the concern of post whoreing in offtopic just take the post counts out of the mix from the off topic forum. We are in a transitional season right now people won't be starting any large projects like V8 swap suspension mods or custom paint or interior work. The large jobs are all wrapping up in prep the summer season. If you want to hit a cruisin, car show, camping or go on vacation now is not the time to rip into your van. Those are the type of build threads spawn alot of posts and forum activity. You will always get some users fliating threw with repair issues. Try and see offtopic as a waste but more something to check out while no one has any large build projects going.

Sorry Tiny, But I'm taking my BOO YAH back. If you have a problem, do you first look at the answer given or do you go to the posters post count and say... Well I don't know, That guy has 3 posts so his answer is prolly wrong.

This is to everybody... POST COUNT IS JUST THAT, A COUNT.

It records your activity on this board.

It does not say whether you have any knowledge of anything.

And, Anyone who gauges someones response by POST COUNT is foolish.

JEEZ PEOPLE, LET IT GO....................................................

No I don't generaly take post counts into concideration it had just been brought up earlier in the thread that offtopic has been used to boost post count. That's why most/many other forums don't take off topic threads into concideration for post counts. That's why I had mentioned it.

Besides I've seen some of the most random ludacris posts from people with the highest post counts.

As I haven't been here too long I don't really want make comparisons. I only ment to give a solution I have seen other forums have done. The forums vary in size from very small as few as 200 members up to very large as many 20k members not everything from a forum will work on other forums. I even a ran a small forum for me and about 50 friends for a car club I was in.

How is making some posts count while others don't a solution. We have already established that the post count is not representative of Wisdom, but of activity. So, I say to you, Why do people think that the other forums method is better than what we have here? How bout if we eliminated post count altogether? Jim

Tiny-in terms of this thread being on page 6 and you just posting...............................Do you often find yourself just get to a party and everyone has already left???. :poke: :poke:

Hehe-just kidding.

If you find yourself researching a posters post count to find if that poster knows what they are talking about of not, well the same time could be more usefully used to research the topic.Fact is post counts I have found over the yrs means very little. In fact honestly,I have myself found learning from newbies and high post count members as well.It just doesn't matter.

In terms of how a site looks to "visitors" that are not members my two cents says as much good info as you can show in threads to them it counts. But then again,it depends a lot on each person and why they want to become apart of a forum. It's a community of a number of different types of people. For me,I am more of a tech wrenching, fabricator type that takes at times these threads way too seriously.

So you are going to build a V8 van with mods??.Please start a thread and I as well as others are there for you.Pics are key.Pm me if you need to and I will help when I can and tell you honestly when I don't know.Age and time on these forums has temper ego somewhat for me.

Looking forward toward your build thread and good luck on your build.

Gar

P.S.:I suggest for you to just let this thread die on it's own because it will over time.

I know I am done with it.
