Buying an astro maybe

Buying an astro maybe

Postby Tiny [OP] » March 14th 2010, 10:22am

So I've been on the hunt for a good astro pre95 era with relativly low miles. I had found a safari rwd passanger van for $1000 but it ended up selling before I was able to get out there to buy it. I just came across a 88 Chevy Vandura 3/4 ton with 73k miles on it. from the pictures it looks to be in good shape. Bright red cargo van, barn doors on side and rear. I'm wondering if I should snatch it up or hold out a lil longer for an astro to pop up on the radar again.

I know I want to go Chevy as I have no trust in Ford or Dodge at all. Is there any comparison for the astro to the full size vans? I know many on here have both fullsize vans as well as there astro/safari vans.

it totally depends on what you wanna do with the van.
now if you want people to get in the van, the question is how many?

Idealy I would like to carry 6-8 people including myselfcomfortably, sleep 2 or 3 people comfortably if I take it camping and be able to tow another car or van if needed. If I got the full size I would be mounting 2 more captains chairs and one more bench in the rear to give it the seating I want with a good amount of storage.

Tiny, No matter what brand or size. The only two differences I see in your choices are, Cargo VS Passenger. Sure you can customize a cargo van, But the passenger van is going to have a lot of the things you are already looking for. Sure they may cost a bit more, but the initial purpose of the van was creature comfort. Not haulin junk around. Proud Owner VS Angry Service Tech. Whatever choice you make, I wish you well. Jim

My issue is ideally I want a windowless passanger van. If I get a normal passanger van I was going to see how hard to would be to remove the glass an weld in sheetmetal and paint. What would require more effort welding and painting or swaping the interior?

Mounting the seats and seatbelts, finding carpet, insulating, heating and cooling VS welding in some sheet steel window fillers... Hmmmmm

Lol I know it sounds like a no brainer but if I grab up a passanger parts van it feels like it would be cheaper then welding and a full new paint job. I know I'm crazy but I hate driving something normal. I think I'll keep looking though.

I would get a passenger Van and weld in panels. Otherwise your going to have to find a way to mount seatbelts and what not. If you got little ones that have to ride in the back that is.....otherwise get a cargo and go nuts!

Nope. No little ones. Though I may need to research any legal requirments my state may have with me adding seats to a cargo van.

Just so you know, you can't get a grill for the dutch door.
This is what I did.
I should also point out that I had to trim back the rear window trim. Tin snips work good, just make sure you don't close the cutters al the way or it will tend to give you a little break at that point.

I'm heading out to go pick up my new van in a little bit. Found a 2001 RWD Astro white cargo tow package. It has 190k miles on it. guy commuted like 100 miles a day in it. Once i get her home I'm going to start measuring and figure out how I'm going to arrange the "lounge" area. First things first I need to come up with a cleaver vanity plate.
