Im looking to buy new tires. Any reccommendations?

Postby Chevymankevin [OP] » November 19th 2012, 1:25am

I plan on buying 4 new tires for my 95 Safari in the stock tire size for the 15" steel wheels. I forget what size they are off the top of my head. I have been looking for a good all season that will give me the best of both worlds good traction in winter on ice and snow. And something that wont wear out super fast that can take a little aggressive driving. :)

I have been looking at BFGoodrich long trail tires. Does anybody have any other reccomendations or currently have Long trail tires?

And I will not buy anythig wall mart sells tire wise. :banghead:

i'll second the Yokohama Geolandars. I'm on my 2nd set on the Astro - average 40 to 50,000 miles per set with rotation every 6000. They also go in the snow on the AWD Astros without missing a beat.

New Engine at 140,000 miles due to intake gasket failure. Hoping to at least double that.

Third on the Yokohama Geolandar AT-S, I had two sets on my van. Great wet/dry performance, quiet, excellent mileage and reasonably priced.

Maybe I should have added reasonable price to the list of preferences. It sounds like those Yokohamas are pretty good tires But, the price for those in my area at least is a little high and out of my price range :( The Yokohamas are the 2nd most expensive tire under the BFGoodrich mud terrains that discount tire carries. They want $150 a tire through discount tire VS. the BFGoodrich long trails for $110 each. And according to discount tires website the long trail is ranked in the "best" tire catagory. And they rank Yokohama in "better" tires. The step down in Yokohamas is the H/T-S and even those are $141 a tire. :banghead:

Ouch, you can almost buy BFG A/Ts for that price.

I got Cooper Discoverer AT3s really reasonable ($104) from Discount Direct . Once they got here it cost me $60/for mount and balance at the Discount shop. Very little snow experience thus far, the bit I had was good but not as good as dedicated snow tires. Otherwise a very nice city/higway tire with solid feel on dirt roads with shallow sand and mud. Nice looking tire too!

Hi. I just put a set of Michelin LTX M/S(with a 60,000 mile warranty) on my Astro and am highly pleased with them. Just got back from a 550 mile round trip and it rode like a cloud. Balance, valve stem, and mount/install free... with free lifetime rotation and flat repair... Included a $60 rebate!
I have a pic of one on my photos...

I'm happy with my General Grabber AT2s so far. The tread is probably a bit more aggressive than what you're looking for, but the road noise is surprisingly less than what I'd expected. Pics in my gallery if you care to consider them.

Funny, I was just going to suggest the Grabbers earlier but got distracted. Going for about 115 on discount direct. They have a small upsize available too. I see a lot of folks running them around here. Guy down the street has a set on an Astro and they look good. Man, there are like 10 Astros in my immediate neighborhood and they are all cool in there own way (4-5 city block radius)!
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direc ... lse&cs=225

Also, I think the Michelin LTX is a really smart tire. Definitely a bit more costly but gets great reviews everywhere. I think both the grabber AT2 and the LTX come with a severe service rating (true snow tire) depending on the size.

Both those tires were high on my list during my last purchase but I found the Cooper Discoverer at such a good price I had to try it. Been happy but I think both Grabber and LTX are superior tires.

I don't get much snow here, and I've not had the Astro out in it, but the Grabbers on my previous work van (Chevy 1500) did well in the one snowstorm we had. Come to think of it, I DID have the Astro out in that snowstorm and it did well.

I went with the Grabbers due to the load and treadwear ratings, and getting 85K out of the set on the 1500. RWL & looking meaty but being quiet were bonuses.

I would just get them for that price. Mastercraft tires are good since they're made by Cooper. Had Mastercraft touring tires on my car once and they were great. Private label tires with all the same USA made quality of the name brand.

I'm very happy with the Firestone Destination LE2 tires I put on the Astro a month or 2 ago. They were $90 or so from Tire Rack. Have the originals on my Safari.

I've had Michelin LT/X and Geolandar HT/S on my Bravada and liked them, too.

After much research I decided to get the Mastercrafts through my Fiance's shop she works at. IMO they are the best bang for the buck. I have read many good reviews and the best part is they fit my budget.

Now I have to make time to bring it in and have them put on and the front end alligned.

Im not saying every tire from wal mart is bad or every wal mart tech is poor at what they do but, Ive had my share of problems with wal mart tires and techs in the past. It took them 4 years and 2 different locations to finally warranty out a defective tire which, they tried to pro rate and charge me for. Not to mention the techs where I have gone are poorly trained broke all of my center caps... faced one whitewall out and left the rest facing in... etc etc... :angry-soapbox:
