Will these fit?

Postby Safaridude [OP] » April 8th 2008, 5:33pm

I have a set of 275-45-20's on 20 x 8.5 rims. Will they fit a 2000 Safari AWD stock height?

Even if they are close to stock height, I kinda doubt that those wide buggars will fit under the tin.

Unless, of course, you only drive in a straight line with no load in the rear.

The bolt pattern is 5X5 and the backspace is 5.238 and the offset is +14mm. The reason I ask is I have these now and I am looking for a 2000- 2002 Astro/Safari 5 lug van. I want bigger wheels and if these fit I would keep them. If not I would have to buy new wheels and tires, or maybe just smaller 20 inch tires. Trying to keep the cost down. Tirerack.com says 20's wont fit on 2000-2002 but are listed on 2003-2005. A rep at 1010tires said 18 was the biggest I could go and anything larger would not have the weight handling capacity needed but on their site they list the Boss 304 20 X 8.5 wheel that I have as fitting a 2000 Astro passenger/cargo van with the same specs. There is also an auction running on ebay with the same size tire and rim combo for an astro van 1985-2002. I am confused. I don't even have an Astro/Safari yet and I am going crazy. This site is full of info and any help would be appreciated.

the 18 and 20 thing is BS. I had 20 x 8.5 wheels on my last van with a 3/5 drop kit on it. Close to the same offset and backspace you have there, but remember that changes with the width. I had some rubbing issues at full lock on the sway bar and inner fender but nothing major. I would think those tires would be really tall and wide for an astro. I had 245/35/20 all the way around, next time i'm going with 255/35/20. 275 might be too wide also on the front of at least a 2wd, not sure about awd

I heard back from 1010tires.com. And I quote " Sure the wheel will physically fit on, but like I said there is no tire made that has a strong enough load capacity to hold the weight of the vehicle when driving. If it was just for show use and was going to be trailered, I'm sure you could get something to fit".
What does that mean? I have these wheels and tires on a full size GMC pick up and I drive it all the time loaded with no issue of weight.
Tirerack.com shows the 2003-2005 Astro could fit a 245-40-20 tire on a 8 to 9.5 wide rim. Overall height is 27.8 inches. Maybe I'll just get new tires and keep the rims.

Tjhanks for the info. I like the rims I have now on my other truck and want to keep them. I would consider changing tire size for that.
