Wheel/Rim recommendations?

Wheel/Rim recommendations?

Postby Canyonero [OP] » August 20th 2014, 2:54am

Tonight I got my 4 new Cooper LT235/75/15's in….. For now they'll have to go on my stock 2002 LT alloy rims which all have some pretty bad salt damage. I'm looking into new rims, but have never bought rims before, only used and kept what was stock on my vehicles.

Any recommendations as to a rim suited to my AWD with 235/75/15" will help.
Do I go with the same size rim, or are there better fits to my new tire size?

Should I be looking at chrome, alloy or something more resistant to salt and dirt roads?

I'm not up on brands of rims, and would like to make this simpler than it was deciding on tires...

Thanks for any recommendations/tips :ty:

Re: Wheel/Rim recommendations?

Postby Canyonero [OP] » August 20th 2014, 3:16am

This is what I'm leaning towards… if they're low maintenance enough… I figure a painted wheel is easy to touch up anytime… Alloys are a mess when salt gets through the clear coat….

How are these GM steel wheels? I just need to find 5 lug 15" GM rims ? Or are there other dimensions I need to be aware of?

I'm unsure of which Offset…. which Bore diameter and the best width. I believe stock was 6.5" .. 7" seems right for 235's...

I'm not sure…. It's a 2" shackle lift….. What would cause it to be forward ?
Although from a quick image search , it seems they all look that way with a 2" shackle lift…

If it is, how would I go about correcting it? A shim , or a helper spring ?

* Just measured… I've got about 3" clearance in rear of tire and 2.5" in front of tire….

Yes the shackle will move the wheel slightly forward. Nothing to worry about because the wheel arcs back when the suspension flexes. Mostly it's a cosmetic concern until you install large tires. No shims or leafs will correct it. You can swap stock spring hangers from side to side to move it back a bit (or leave them in place and drill new holes), or buy adjustable spring hangers. It's nothing to be concerned with until you rub.

You could always spin the front leaf spring hanger around on the drivers side, I have yet to do this, but will eventually when I get around to it, most of the Astro van's the tire does sit closer to the front of the well on the drivers side, it is just easier to see this once you go bigger tires and a lift....

The front spring hanger in the rear have an off-centered hole, so if you flip it around and remount it it will be off-centered to the rear instead of the front, which would move that part of the axle back.

Thanks guys… Had me worried for a bit… although I've drive 100+ miles since the lift and all is well. I don't think there's any vibration, tough to tell, if there is it's minor. But I know I'm due for 2 new U joints too.

I may get my new tires put on the OEM rims for now and pick up some Cragers when I decide what rim I like…

Kenk, your van looks just like mine…
What kind of rims are those ?

I like these simple Cragar 15x7 black steel rims… They look nice with center caps and stainless rings.

I'm unsure which backspacing is correct for my 235/75/15's on a 2" lift…

American raceing Baja, no clear coat, I put 225/75/16 on, no go, it's not lifted, so we tried 215/65/16, no issues, they do hang out a few inches more than stock, but I'm good with that

Those are nice….
I have my new tires and don't want to wait for rims.. so I'm using my originals… At least I can take my time and switch them later. Still need to do a new fender and hood from deer damage anyway…

Really like the look of this Astro with grill fins painted black… although the rims are too flashy for me.

while I really like the flashy rims, in reality, i`m too lazy to maintain them, my Baja`s are not clear coated, I will take them off every spring and polish them
