Clearcoating wheels?

Clearcoating wheels?

Postby gejettest [OP] » June 12th 2010, 5:56pm

Hello,
Included are pictures of my wheels which are showing signs of aging.
I would like to renew the clearcoat, any tips?
Please note, I just washed the wheels, so the staining you see has permeated the old clearcoat.
Thanks,
Henry

It's not going to last forever, but
  • Soda blast the wheels and then clear coat them.
  • Then in a couple of years... repeat.

Thanks for the tip,
Will the soda blasting dull the wheels? If so, will I have to polish them? Speaking of polishing, will clearcoat stick to a freshly polished wheel? I did a set of aluminum wheels some time ago, but after polishing I used a clear primer, I didn't like it as it gave the polished surface a cloudy, milky appearance that the clear only made permanent.

Yes, you should polish them. However, remember that Aluminum oxidizes, almost immediately. It forms a anodized layer, I suspect that's what you're seeing; it could also be a reaction between the aluminum and the clear coat chemicals.
