LowBallers on Kijiji

LowBallers on Kijiji

Not just Kijiji this goes for alot of online marketplaces. I hate it when you put up ads and of course you put it for a little bit more than you want for it so you can get what you want. I put something up for 500$ and put specifically that low ballers will be ignored and here I have people offering me 100 or 200 dollars for it. Like what the Heck do you people not understand what "lowballers will be ignored" means :banghead: . Best just to use the good old fashion for sale sign in the window.

LOL Craigslist is horrible about that. There's a local Facebook yard sale group that's like that too... The replys are usually "How low will you go" and "whats your bottom dollar". I've seen them offer half what someone's wanting for an item like it's a backwards eBay. It's crazy...

I have had it with Craigslist and the baloney. When I quote a price I don't haggle. You want it or you don't.I never ask what it worth anyway.Say a price less than I ask and no more talking. No deal.Oh now you will give me what I wanted, to bad you can't have it.Just for playing games.I was posting free stuff I had gotten in other deals I did not want.Say a Grant steering wheel for a Honda civic new in the box.Well guy came over and did nothing but non-stop complain.Like he wanted me to put it on to or he was not interested. After an hour I told him leave take it or not.Bottom line I don't want bottom feeders like that knowing where I live.So now If I tired of expensive stuff like that taking up space downstairs.I ask friends, if nobody wants it straight in the garbage.

So we complain about lowballers, when the ad is deliberately highballed, so you can get what you want! Which way do you want it? The post that says show a firm price and stick to it is the way to go. I can never understand how folks use the dealers and private sellers who advertise a phone number and that's all. They don't get my business. Keep it simple - fixed price.

It takes a certain type of person to buy and sell on craigslist. My way of doing it is to put my best face forward. I act like I never even heard of lowballers, tire kickers, nit pickers, no showers, ect. I try and not act like a unpleasant person to deal with. When they email me with the low balls I send them a reply that their price has been noted. I only talk price in person, because people will shoot you emails from different addresses trying to find how low you will go.
I hate the road tolls I have to pay here just to drive on the "freeway". I just say it is cost of doing business. people are never going to stop those irritating lowball offers.
This car I recently sold, I was asking 500 dollars. I knew it would be sold by sundown so I acted a little more cocky. I said 500 dollars is the price, bring cash, do not call me if you do not have cash, none of that i need to stop at the bank crap, none of that " will you take 475". Understand that 500 dollars is a good price so do not waste my time while I could be selling this car to someone with money. About 15 minutes after posting it some guy called me said, I will take it, hold it, I am on my way. I felt him out a little bit and said fine. You have two hours to get here. He came by handed me the cash and loaded the car on to his truck.

I put something up for 500$ and put specifically that low ballers will be ignored and here I have people offering me 100 or 200 dollars for it. Like what the Heck do you people not understand what "lowballers will be ignored" means :banghead: .

Well you have to understand exactly what you communicated in your ad. You didn't say, "Do not make any lowball offers." You just simply said that they would be ignored.. so just ignore them and move on. My advice would be to not take offense to ridiculous offers. If anything, it indicates to you that someone read your ad and they were indeed interested in what you were selling. As long as you aren't spending any time haggling with them, there really is no harm done.

The replys are usually "How low will you go" and "whats your bottom dollar". I've seen them offer half what someone's wanting for an item like it's a backwards eBay. It's crazy...

That's from people who watch too much of those "Bargain Hunter" type of reality shows. :shifty: But one thing that I like to do is when my item is $100 and they ask me if I can go any lower, I say, "Sure, how does $150 sound?" And when they give me the "WTH" type of response in their body language or their comments, then I'll say, "Oh.. well what about $200? $250? Hello.....?" Yeah.. haggle with me will ya..

Say a price less than I ask and no more talking. No deal.Oh now you will give me what I wanted, to bad you can't have it.Just for playing games.

Oh..c'mon. You can't blame a guy for trying.. can you? The bottom line is that you want to sell, he wants to buy, you stood firm, and he complied. (amazing how that rhymed)

I was posting free stuff I had gotten in other deals I did not want. Well guy came over and did nothing but non-stop complain...I ask friends, if nobody wants it straight in the garbage.

I agree.. it's MUCH harder to give something away than it is to sell it. I don't know why this is such a flaw in the human psyche but when you sell something for ANY price, people take it with them and learn to love it regardless of any problems. On the other hand, if you let them have it for FREE, they want to pick over it and ask questions, stand you up while you are waiting for them to come get it, etc. Like every now and then I would give away one of my older computers (that worked perfectly fine) because I wasn't using it and it was taking up space. Well sure enough, every time I did that, my good deed was always followed up by that dreaded phone call from the guy complaining that the computer that I so negligently GAVE HIM was causing him problems and he expected me to come over and fix it. Why? I guess because in his mind, giving it to him somehow made me responsible for making sure it was set up correctly.

The first time I sold a car on craigslist (non-running, well, knocking bad) I got a call and was asked (sight unseen) what's the lowest I would go. Told him, and when he came out, he wanted to haggle lower. So now, I put "will not haggle except in person". You have no idea what condition the item I'm selling is in, the price I'm offering might be a heck of a great deal.

Also, if I say $500, $400 or $450 would be a great starting point, not $100. It's all those stupid Discovery channel shows that people think that they can just name some stupid low price and get it for that.

My major pet peeves:
1) Ads w/o pics. What kind of excuse is "I don't have a camera" or "text for pics"? For $10 you can go and get a cheap basic digital camera from Walmart and take a pic. Heck, most phone have cameras. Take a pic of the actual thing you're selling, not some "stock photo". People want to see the condition of what you have.

2) No description. I don't care if your title catches my eye, you don't tell me anything about it, I don't want it. Also goes for vague ones. Nice, simple, descriptive with lots of pertinent info means I won't waste my time or yours with tons of questions.

3) From other cities over an hour away. I see Chicago ads all the time in Milwaukee cl. If I wanted to drive as far as Chi town, I'll look in their cl. But I don't. I understand you're trying to get many eyes on it, but unless you're delivering it for free all the way up here, keep it in your own town's cl.

4) No price/best offer. This ain't ebay. Put a price on it. Part of cl rules.

-Andrew

Craigslist is a network of online communities. It is worldwide and features free online classified advertisements. Most of the people here are getting frustration with low-ballers on craigslist including myself. Everytime I list something on Craigslist, my Inbox fills with emails saying that i am very interested on your item but i have not had one of those in a while, surprisingly.

The spam is getting harder to spot. In the near future, anyone that was professional, asked the right questions, mentioned points i made in the ad- well i knew they were the spammers.
You can put an audio clip that blasts out the mileage every time they move the mouse, what is the first question a real person would ask. What is the mileage. i know people look at tons of cars for sale, they never follow up on there questions. It is like you have to call them and ask if they are still alive. Many times they write back saying yes. Meaning the other cars they looked at were junk, now they are interested again. You really have to pester them.
I am considering only putting my phone contact at this point. My other new policy is just to run my cars into the ground so i do not have to sell them. Does life really have to be this difficult.

I usually will claim to have had good success on Craigslist, but...
I've been scouring ads looking for a car for the last week or so. I have tried to contact over 20 sellers: just-posted ads, must-sells, has to go, etc. I have had one guy return a phone call, and one other guy texted me a couple crappy pics, but then wouldn't answer his phone. Some of the ads I have emailed plus texted from one phone number and called from another phone number. No responses.

Kind of unrelated but a funny CL story: a few years ago I posted my 18 year old work truck for sale with a dirt cheap price. I just wanted it sold quick. I got a call from a guy that wanted to look at it but his absolute main concern was whether this 18 year old truck had ever been smoked in. He called several times bugging me about it. Come on, I get it for a late model vehicle but this was like responding to personal ads hoping to find a 40 year old virgin.

The used car dealers hunt down all the deals. They must be using some sort of software that alerts them to a deal. I had a guy call me from five hours away tell me to hold the car. Ha Ha. After about 7 calls I just turned my phone off. It is overwhelming if you have a car worth a darn.
I wonder if i was to post that I am giving away a car if the low ball crew would contact me ask ask if I would pay to have it taken away.

The other side of the CL coin.
When I was in Hawaii looking for a place to rent before Mrs Boss got there, I responded to over 30 CL ads and only got 5-6 calls back. I would respond with something simple, I'm interested in your property for rent on Kaiminani and would like to arrange a time to see it. I'd see ads reposted for the same property's week after week after week. I'd use the land line instead of my cell so their caller ID would show a local area code, still no responses.

I guess posting property for rent ads on CL is a local past time there

I agree with paintdrying, they must have something that tracks good deals because I'm always getting 150$ or 200$ offers from wrecking yards. It must flag ads like "1998 GMC Safari AWD 500$ O.B.O." and automatically offer a price 60% cheaper. Easy for the buyer annoying for the seller. Anyways my van isn't for sale any more I need the parts.

I once had a guy drive four hours to pick up a van. I was asking 500 on craigslist. He said he was going to give 300. On the way to see me his gps took him an hour out of the way. He told me he would be lucky if he only lost like 100 dollars.
I looked on craigslist in the city he was from. Their was maybe 15 -20 people buying junk cars. My city had zero. Well, really my city had one person buying them, but he was a zero.

I bought the 98 safari for 500$ dollars. 1 1/2 hours each way to pick up, so about 50 dollars fuel there + 70 back + 200 car trailer rental so it was pretty much a 800$ parts van with 1500$ of the parts I needed plus extras. I got a good enough deal already that I didn't want to rip the guy off. It was almost a blind sale but I said 500$ and I wasn't going to get there and offer him 200$ for a complete van just my :2:
