Harbor fright Strikes again

Harbor fright Strikes again

Postby ratdude747 [OP] » December 30th 2012, 5:40am

Not sure if this has been posted or not... (I know I could search for it)

But I'm damn lucky my HF jackstands didn't kill me.

http://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-heav ... 38846.html

Thier stands are BS. Those ratings are BETWEEN BOTH STANDS. That's right, they actually are 1.5T stands, not 3T stands! :eek

You'd think they were 3T a pop since even the iron saddles say "3 TON". But If one reads the manual, it begs to differ.

I bought a set a few months back. I used them only once or twice... the really dinky saddles should have given it away...

They held the van Ok... but given what a fiasco the oil change was (I had to use a massive breaker bar to get out the drain plug), I could have been one vertical pull away from getting crushed.

At least I Only wasted $15 on them.

...and great, now I need to get both a decent jack AND some jack stands before my next oil change in 800MI. :screaming:

I keep the jack underneath vehicle as well as the jack stand if im gonna be under it. My van sits high enough to not crush me though. Gotta love ground clearance.

$15 for a set of two jack stands ??? What do you want for $15 ??? Do they come with a guarantee ??? If they fail and you get kilt while

using them, do you get a free replacement set ???

I too keep the jack underneath in case I yank the vehicle off the stands somehow.

I went all out when I got my stands- Northern tool, but this was before EVERYTHING went to China. Even then it took 3 sets before getting a pair whose roll pins didn't shear the first time I used them.

And this is why I never buy anything I don't intend to break from HF... except their Chicago Electric stuff, that line has served me well. Everything else - disposable.
I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience, though... I've seen 4x4 wood beam props perform as jack stands in a pinch just fine (I wouldn't recommend it, but I've seen it) Scary to think that a device sold for that purpose would fail at it's job.

I'll come out of the closet...My 6T stands are from HF. They used to hold up a loaded P-30 GMC bread truck (10k gvw empty) so I guess they will

hold up a dinky Astro. I too, leave the jack under the truck, but having had one jack fail and the truck come down like gangbusters, I

will never rely on any jack, mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic. Fact be known, I'm somewhat leary of elephant ramps, to be honest.

True story: I was working in my driveway, one sunny day, and happened to look over at my next door neighbor who had complained that the

starter on his truck was toast. He had all my tools and equipment at his disposal, yet, he opted to jack up the front of the truck with a

bumper jack. The street has a bit of a downhill slope to it, and I doubt that the parking brake was set, or that it even was in working

condition. I didn't see chocks under the rear wheels, nor did he have blocking underneath the front wheel. You can guess where my

neighbor was... No, nothing happened, no blood on the street, no car sitting at the end of the block, and no rushed call for an EMT.

His truck, his jack, his starter, his body, his thought process. Needless to say, I have great respect for 'heavy things that go fast and

can kill in an instant', but I fear that most people just don't get it.

a pair of wheel chocks or the E brake at the very least should be used any time you are jacking up a vehicle. I had my 2.5 ton floor jack ( not the crappy trolley jacks you get at walmart ) roll on my driveway putting a nice dent on the underside of my wifes Grand Am once. Blocks of wood and wheel jacks are always around my driveway in the event they are needed.
A temporary fix usually becomes a permanent solution, therefore it does not exist.

when my 89 crown vic was stolen for the 4 time they had used milk crates as stands to steal the wheels.

people still steal rims? or stereo's anymore?

seems like vehicle related theft has dropped off a lot around here....which is a good thing. i never take my faceplate off.
come to think of it though my 95 was broken into 3 times in 3 days.

When I was 16 I had a 67 firebird I bought from a local junk yard, I had it jack =ed up with concrete blocks under the front and a scissor jack under the rear axle and no wheels or tires on it. I was under it and pulling on an exhaust pipe and something told me to move! I rolled out as fast as possible and the car crashed to the ground. All I got was a pinched shoulder which healed in about a week. Since then I have never climbed under a vehicle without jack stands. That is why I have 8 of them. And two hydraulic jacks. What good is a beautiful Vehicle if your to messed up to enjoy it due to your own stupidity?

Anyone who would trust their life to something from Harbor Freight is a fool.
Jackstands, engine hoists, ramps, trailers etc. NO WAY!

I could see buying a tarp from there, or some tie wraps but that's about it.
I've seen people hurt using their tools and I really don't feel sorry for them.

Pop quiz time...What are the 3 rules regarding hanging loads ?

I'll probably keep using the Harbor Freight stands. The $89 It will run me for a 3T trolley Jack (also from Harbor Freight) is $$$ enough... And even that I'm having to consider the costs on.

On one hand, I could keep using the spare jack to lift the van onto the jackstands... On the other, doing that is a massive PITA and probably is outside what the spare jack was meant to do.
