2001, Auto , RWD , 60,000m , abused but loved.

Progressively worsening of reverse engagement. That is slip then grab for a week once a day. Now grinding non engagement .
ABS indicator lit up on last attempt to reverse.
Now on last trip ; second started ? slipping / gabbing or something so I have not used it.

Not a lot of miles on this and I was thinking the limited slip optional rear differential or brake drum problem was the cause of these symptoms.

It is not functioning good at all and needs a replacement installed.
Second one in this truck but I haul weight and same failure as last time.
So I am on the hunt for a swap unit. I have posted in the automatic forum requesting
direction as to how to attempt this seeming doable procedure in my driveway.

You need to add an auxiliary transmission cooler if you're doing a lot of hauling. The transmission cooling is marginal at best from the factory. Personally, I'd add the biggest cooler I could squeeze in, and run an electric fan on it.

1st and 3rd only, no 2,4 or R; sunshell is fractured or splines are sheared off. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.
9. No 2nd or 4th gear. 2-4 band is slipping. Servo seals may be damaged (can be fixed without removing trans. Otherwise, 2-4 band is worn out. R&R.

^ If it's the sunshell worn out at 60K, you need to get the trans rebuilt, not replace it with another take-out transmission, and have something like "The Beast" heavy duty sunshell installed, amongst some other upgraded components, otherwise, if you're putting that thing through that much abuse, it's going to continue to happen! Even if it's burning up the bands and clutches that fast, you need those upgraded and additional trans fluid AND engine oil cooling.

Large external cooler I installed in front of rad originally was in series with the cooler in the rad.
When the repair shop seen this they bypassed the rad and used only the external one as I had installed such a large one before 150k of towing etc. This trans was repaired as there was only one common failure (2md & reverse slipping real badly).
Great idea if you are not in very cold climate zone.,.. Which I am. very hard shifting without any load and never warms up to proper operating temperatures.

Sounds like I can try to change some thing after inspection without removing the whole casting ?? This would be great .
No reverse and slipping in 1st. Actually I just got home and it started to do this when I attempted to back up the grade of my driveway. But I left it as is never driving it and some misengagement in 1st just moving it within the driveway . Leaving it a month you can see it is leaking at rear seal also. Prepared to look for another but since I have to take the pan off to drain I will do a better inspect and not go with the assumption that there is nothing that can be done without complete removal.

So Thank You I have no reason now to procrastinate.
