1999 Astro 4L60E 3-4 slipping ...

Hi, new user here...
I have a 1999 Astro 4L60E with 3-4 slipping, Seems to have had a slight slipping issue in Drive over the last year (in the past I topped off the fluid and it was good to go). Was going down the freeway the other nite and trans started to slip badly in D & 3 (1,2 and passing gear work). Added a quart of fluid (turns out is was overfull) and limped it home. Dropped the pan expecting to find a bunch of material in the pan, but was only a very small amount of metal, no chunks ect, slight burnt smell.

I read the 4L60E common troubles posted on this site. From that info, seems I burned up the 3-4 clutches.

Looking for confirmation of the 3-4 clutches... as I expected a bunch of clutch material in the pan, could overfilling cause any of these symptoms? Anything else I can look at? If this was a T350 or T400 and I found such a small amount of material in the pan I would change the filter and add a can of Seafoam.

EDIT: I did try my AutoXray scanner and it seems that it doesn't scan trans codes, also checked fuses underhood(all good)

If you serviced you trans regularly you won't see much in the pan as it's cumulative wear on the 3-4 clutch pack. Main reason for the wear is the soft shifting they set these trans up with so it's hard to feel when the gear changes happen.

I had to have Green's transmission rebuilt because of this. If you are able to drop the trans yourself you can save a lot of money. I was able to find a small rebuilding shop near me that did the job, with serious upgrades for less than a grand.

If you haven't done it already add some Lucas Transmission Fix. It's a friction modifier that will buy you some time. It's made Grumpy's slipping trans work well enough for some off road climbing fun. Last year on the BABE Rally a group of guys in a full size van complained that there trans shifted from 2nd directly to 4th, had them add Lucas and their trans functioned normally again.

Wow that is a great deal , what is the name of the place that does rebuilds with serious upgrades for less than a grand , is it the same place as the link you give?

It seems from the webpage they may not do Front Wheel drive trans , they have price listed but no info at all on any like they do for the RWD , wonder if they no longer offer

Yeah, Shift Rite is the place that did Green's trans. I had them do all the hot rod upgrades. Trans slams the shifts hard, wife doesn't like it. If I get into it I'll break the tires loose for the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.

The owner of Shift Rite (Brett) is not that great at website programming. He says that while RWD are their bread and butter, they don't have a problem doing FWDs. Says his busiest time is during plowing season. I've been told he'll walk me through a rebuild for Grumpy if done during his off season. I'll be paying the normal rebuild price while doing this.

That would still be worth it , knowledge and experience , in the future you can do it for free labor and maybe do some for others who need help

Thanks for the replies... did a filter and fluid change, still slips.... Pulled the trans this afternoon, Found a couple used trans for $375 one with 117K and one with 70K on a factory reman...
