Prospective AWD Astro owner seeking advice

Postby jeff090 [OP] » December 28th 2017, 5:25am

Hi Everyone,

Love the site.

I currently own a 2wd Astro and am looking to upgrade to AWD.

I am going to look at 2 vans on Friday. I need help choosing between the two.

Van 1:
GT4, G80, 225,000 miles, new transmission.

Van 2:
GT4, open rear diff, 125,000 miles, all original.

I really want limited slip because I know I will be pushing the traction limits here and there. My question is, all else being equal, is it better to buy the van with the G80 and new tranny and deal with the high mileage, or should I just buy the one with low miles and upgrade the diff.

I know without seeing the vans yet this conversation is purely speculative, but I want to go in with as much info as possible.

And if anyone suggests that I buy both and have one as a parts car, I have already though of that and I have no room to store the extra one.

Thanks!

Jeff

For me it would really depend on the condition, but all else being equal I would go with the lower mileage and then upgrade to a locker(G80 or other) if you decide you need to.

x2, lower mileage one and then upgrade the diff....unless the lower mileage one is all rusted out.

All vans being equal as far as condition. I would pick van #1. But I am a tech and fix it up if it needed. G80 is nice (if it still works). A new trans is nicer. What's the price difference?

I'd go with lower miles. You may be surprised how much a difference just having AWD makes. If your not pleased, swap in a locker. Good luck!

Ooooor you could put a locker in your 2wd and lift the crap out of it. I think I've seen that somewhere....

Go with the lower mileage. The GT4 is the 3.73 ratio which I LOVE! The 4l60e trans usually good for 175,000 miles. I would do a swap to synthetic fluid add a cooler and upgrade the valve body with new accumulators. Heat kills AT’s. Keep the fluid temp down, synthetic doesn’t break down like Dino juice. Eliminate the cause of heat which is slipping clutches. Easy to do, cheap and removes all the reasons these things fail at 175,000. Do these upgrades before you need to and your trans will last forever. Ish.
I have the Detroit Truetrac in the rear of my van and the G80 locker in the rear of my ‘00 Blazer Zr2. I HATE the G80! Does it work? Well ya but...There has to be 125rpm difference between wheels before it kicks in and it’s clunky and harsh. The Truetrac eliminates wheel spin period! If your going to keep this van then do the Truetrac.

I'd go for the less rusty van.

Transmissions and differentials can be rebuilt. Once a van is rusting out from underneath you, well, you're screwed.

You never said what year these 2 vans are . In my opinion my 98 AWD astro was a way better system then my current 02 AWD astro. If I had the choice to buy a good shape 98 or older AWD , that is the one I would buy.

Usually vans with high mileage go for very little and vans with low mileage go for quite a bit. so if prices are the same then I would get the van with lower miles. And year ranges does play a roll in choices as well depending on your preference and future goals are.
