UGH OH - Got stuck in gear and then it spewed tranny fluid..

Postby castlerox [OP] » May 20th 2018, 3:52pm

Hi All,

So yesterday upon helping my friend move I was driving along about 40mph when I noticed my engine was still engaged in a gear when I removed my foot from the pedal.

It was a little startling because I had to brake pretty heavily to slow it down. I reached down and the actual pedal was still down. I grabbed it and pulled it back but the van was still jamming along on its own. I was able to pull in to a safe spot. I put it in neutral and oh boy, the thing started REVVING like crazy. I could barely get it in to Park before I was able to shut her down.

After exterior inspection... The pink fluid was slowly flowing out from the front end.

I had to leave the scene so I had it towed to a friends shop.

Any initial ideas before the bad news tmrw?

Thanks in advance!
Matt

Something is causing the throttle pedal to hang open. It could be a kink in the cable, or something fell (a piece of insulation) that is causing it to not return to idle.
As for the leak, it sounds like the front seal is kaput. You'll have to separate the engine from the trans, and remove the trans, so you can pull the torque converter and replace the seal. Then put it all back together and top up the trans fluid.

You didn't get "stuck in gear".. it sounds like your throttle simply got stuck.
Usually the best solution, once you've safely stopped, is to shut the key off first, and find the problem. Last weekend my throttle stuck on my 92, I shut the key off and coasted to a stop.

Not sure if over-revving the engine just pushed out some fluid or not.
You may have also temporarily overheated the trans while you were braking with the throttle still applied. There's a fair chance that there is no damage.

Good luck

Automatic Forum
AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
