BG Service on Transmission

BG Service on Transmission

Postby miketoybox [OP] » December 12th 2011, 2:34pm

Just bought a 2002, AWD. Found out it has been service by BG @ 78K miles (it now has 126K).

Anybody else used this service before? and when should my next service be done?
Currently my fluid looks deep red, and smells like tranny fluid.

You should change your fluid , soon be sure you use Dexron VI

The only BG service i heard of is a brand name
It will depend on the type of service you get , how skilled and careful the techs are

Transmission fluid is rich in dispersants which are cleaning agents to help keep the passages in the trans clean , if you keep a regular routine of dropping pan and change filter and fluid every 15,000 miles , you would not ever need a flush , and during regular intervals you don't need any other chemicals to flush your trans other than trans fluid , I am not a fan of power flushes , too much chance of causing problems as it can , under pressure force dirt particles in areas where it cannot come out , even a skilled tech can cause problems if they are not using caution ,

To do it right you have to first replace the fluid filter , then do the flush , , if you don't replace the filter first you push the debris in the filter back into the trans , If you use a method that circulates the fluid back through the flush machine , then you should replace filter after the flush

If you do your own flush by hand at home you can save a lot of the cost of labor and you don't risk high pressure problems as you only use the pressure from the trans.
Trans fluid price has risen and shops will charge more for fluid than you will pay at walmart or parts store

So what I am saying is , if you drop pan and change fluid and filter , you are replacing half of total fluid in the trans , and adding a new filter every 15K miles and the second most important thing you can do to protect your trans is to keep the fluid cool by using an external cooler , ,,If you keep the fluid cool and drop pan and replace filter every 15K , you are not ever going to need a BG service nor any powerflush

Think of it as in house cleaning ,, if you clean your bathtub once a week , you will only need a simple squirt bottle cleaner and it is mostly just a spray wipe , rinse with water ....but if you don't clean your tub but every 6 months , you will need an abrasive cleaner and need to use a lot of elbow grease to cut through all the grime

Thanks for the info

Trannie filter/fluid change is on my list this week. The people I bought the van from fallowed the owners manuel on services.
I assume the reason why they never gave it a full tune up is BG talked them out of it (they also did the BG fuel/ing./AC/axle/cooling service). At least they took care of it  .
Down fall is it suffers Old person foot, upper rpms no power :layrubber: .

I haven't look yet, does the 02 have a drain plug on the torq convertor? My 02 S10 did, it had the same trannie.

AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
