No power to transmission?

No power to transmission?

Postby Canoeingupstream [OP] » March 6th 2020, 2:44am

Just picked up this gorgeous 1994 1 owner Astro. Old lady owned it and it was always babied. Been driving it daily and no troubles til tonight. Got halfway home and it seemed like I lost all power to the transmission. Barely rolled into my driveway. No reverse or any gears work. Haven’t had any signs of transmission problems. The fluid is full and still clean. No codes on the obd computer. What should I look for?

Does it do anything if you put the gear shift down to the bottom two positions? I would put a pressure gauge on it, I'm thinking pump took a dump.

I would ask if there was any work done recently, but if you just bought it you might not know.

Ok so I just went out to turn the van around so it doesn’t get towed. Reverse and first get enough power to oh so slowly move the vehicle but just barely. No jerks no grinding. I read on another post of a guy that had the same issue having his catalytic converters clogger was the issue.

In the 2 minutes it took to turn around my exhaust pipe wasn’t hot but my catalytic converters was scalding. Could it be clogged? Or just a transmission issue?

Pull a front o2 sensor and see if it improves.

Yes.

If the cat’s scalding hot and the muffler or tailpipe aren’t, it’s a good sign the cat’s clogged. If it is, you need to figure out why. Cats are killed, they don’t just die.

So, check plugs-wires-cap-rotor-coil and make sure there are no arc/burn marks. Check for spark leak with a light mist of water while it’s running in the dark.

Is your ‘94 TBI (round air cleaner on top of the motor) or CPI (rectangular box for air cleaner under the hood)?

If it’s CPI, you might have a fuel leak under the plenum, either from the FPR (fuel pressure regulator) or the nut kit (fuel pressure and return lines).

Does the engine run ok/rev and hold higher RPMs (not too high)? Post a video on YouTube and give us a link, that would help quite a lot.

Took the cat off and the same thing is happening. Vans motor is fine and not running hot at all. Can’t get any real power to the transmission. Gonna have to tow it to a transmission shop for inspection. Coming from the world of Toyota’s it’s a real bummer GM produced such crappy transmissions.

Explain "real power"? When auto transmissions go bad, engine will rev up just fine, but nothing moves.I have never sen a auto trans "lock up", so vehicle does not move, and engine does not rev up. However,a transfer case or differential can. If engine is not reving up, could be something as simple as you have brakes that are locked up.

Things don't seem to be 'falling into place' on that diag. thing. And about the trans.... not heard that before. I had/have heard the trans are/were very good.

Well, after all... what would Banacek say ?... “It is only a matter of time before armed citizens, waiting or not for the police, take things into their own hands, fire on the rioters for personal and property prot. & end up hunted like dogs.”

Block front wheels, jack up rear end so both rear wheels are off the ground. Put it in Neutral , engine off, and see how hard/easy it is to rotate the rear wheels by hand. If it's not easy your brakes or a bearing is locked up. If it's easy then start it up and put it in Drive. See if the engine/transmission turns the wheels. See if the wheels keep spinning when you put it back into Neutral.

Re: No power to transmission?

Postby Mmusicman » March 9th 2020, 1:15am

Come to think of it... I had a transmission do something weird and crazy to me once.

Driving home one day.. I suddenly lost all forward and reverse power. I limped off the road into a parking lot, got out and checked everything I could see, all looked normal. I was going to see if I could slowly limp into a better spot while I waited for a tow-truck. When I restarted it, suddenly it was working perfectly again. Went a few miles.. then it lost all forward motion again (in ANY gear). Shut it off, restarted, and I was suddenly rolling again like nothing had ever happened.

I believe (it is my guess) debris in the fluid was likely causing a hydraulic valve to stick causing fluid pressure to fail. Shutting down the engine reset the valve and all was good until the valve stuck again.

I ran some Trans-Tune though it (which seemed to cure it immediately), drained and replaced the fluid with new, and it never did this again.

Eventually however, I found the transmission had lived it's full life and the clutches were failing (over 230K). But it never stopped moving after the Trans-Tune.

I can't say if this is the same problem as your transmission... it could be anything.
But it was mine.

What ended up being the issue?

I have very similar symptoms. The van looses all power to the transmission and no gear works but the engine still revs. The only difference is that if I turn it off, wait a minute and then back on, I can put it in D or Reverse and crawl for a bit.... but it eventually dies and nothing works until I repeat the sequence.
