high revs but no power

high revs but no power

Postby [email protected] [OP] » September 8th 2008, 5:50am

Got my 95 running today and took it for a test drive.....
Seemed fine, acceleration was poor in my opinion, could not get over 75. Set CC for 70 and would slow down going up hills.....it downshifted and put on the fuel to keep up with CC setting but never really accelerated up the hill. Turned off CC and stepped on the gas, it downshifted again, revs went SUPER high, but did not accelerate, got a bad feeling in my stomach because this was the same hill it died on last year. The tranny is LOW on fluid...I added 2 quarts plus a quart of "stop leak". I read a post on here earlier about a guy loosing power up hills and associated that with low tranny fluid. I have been told by more than one shop that it is "very" low on fluid, yet the stick shows in between cold and hot, when hot. Should I just keep adding fluid?? Capacity is 11 quarts, could potentially be only 3 quarts in there now. Does that really affect power?

Thanks guys!

Well, it doesnt really affect your engine performance, but it does affect you ability to move, Now you figure in how much tranny fluid you have in your trans, 3 quarts really isn't enough to do squat with concidering most of that is probably in the torque converter..One thing I am wondering is does your transmition go in and out of gear while driving? If not then odds are its not a transmition issue (even though it sounds like you do have trasmition problems).....Try popping the hood and checking your air flow. (take and put your hand over the air intake tube thats connected to the intake (this involves removing your air filter) if there is little suction I think it would be safe to assume that your engine is getting too much back pressure, (this is caused by clogged cat, or exhaust pipe (usually that cat though)). It could also be a dirty air filter, if this is the case you should notice improvement just by removing the air filter.

Lemme know if any of this helps
~Chris

Automatic Forum
AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
