Lost Reverse - 1999 Astro - Automatic

Postby mdsmeck [OP] » July 22nd 2012, 11:10am

1999 Astro Cargo Van...Approx 196,000 miles...

Noticed a small puddle of fluid leaking Friday evening/early Saturday morning, but wasn't able to determine where it was coming from...Was doing late night/early morning deliveries and there were no problems with the van's operation...

This evening I went out - started it up, shifted into reverse and NOTHING!!!

I know very little about mechanics - What exactly is the problem, approx how much will this cost to repair and is it OK to drive forward only??? LOL...

Mike...

Sounds like the sun shell gear broke. Second should be gone to.
If that is the case then there is small broken metal pieces floating around waiting to cause mischief when they get caught in other things if you continue to drive it.

Maybe check the fluid level before doing anything else?

Automatic Forum
AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
