The purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.

Im getting ready to do a full cradle swap engine and transmission from a 1996 to a 2001 . I checked and all the engine components online and they seem the same .. but i am drawing a big ???? on the transmission. When you research transmissions it says 1996-97 same .... then 1998-2001 are the same ..Now remember im not disconnecting the engine and trannys.. the 1996 engine and tranny connected to cradle are going on the 2001 body and harness..thanks

The '96 won't have the "Tow/Haul" button on the end of the shift lever for one so I'm guessing something is different in the electronics but if that is a deal killer or not, I don't know.
