99 safari, AWD transfer case popping

Postby texaszero [OP] » February 26th 2013, 4:54am

well my van started popping from the drive line, as my band made it back to town from tour. i checked the you joints, they all seemed good, checked the rear end, it looked good. when i twisted the derive shaft back and forth i could tell it was coming from the transfer case. so i put it on jack stands and removed the drain plug, and hardly any oil came out. not good. the rear seal was leaking and it lost all the oil on the trip( i am assuming) .

my question is, can i just fill it back up with oil and drive it, or is there any thing in the transfer case that is now damaged? also how does the front shaft come out of the case?

the band will be hitting the road again soon and i gotta get this thing back purring like a kitten

thanks johnny

front shaft has four bolts on the f. diff side and it slides off the output shaft on the t.case side.

fill it up with 2 quarts of auto-trac II, and see what happens.........

It should just slide out, you may have to "coax" it with a hammer. Chances are the lack of lubrication has it stuck. You will want to replace the leaking seal and fill it with new fluid. It's a gamble whether the transfer case will have survived or not. Chances are probably not on your side as it needs the fluid to lubricate the clutch pack with oil, and the clutch pack needs oil.
A temporary fix usually becomes a permanent solution, therefore it does not exist.
