Hello my fellow crazies!

I was at my parents for dinner, ended up talking to my dads neighbor who is a mechanic, I mentioned my shudder at hiway speeds.

He first successfully guesses the type of trans and tells me it's caused by the torque converter being on its way out.

Now he's said as a solution without replacing the tc, is to unplug the Tcc plug at the trans. Says ill still have all 4 gears, just no tc lockup. Says he's been doing it for twenty years.

He was also surprised to know that I knew what trans was in my van, didn't get around to talking about risks or codes related to unplugging, as I had to remove a raccoon from my parents attic. (Btw raccoons are arsholes).

My question is, what are the risks? And how what does lockup mean/do?

No risk it just won't lock up if you unplug it. It will work like a old style 350 turbo.
The torque converter is fluid drive so it slips as it works. The lock-up is a clutch inside of the torque converter. It ain't a slippin anymore. Locks it up tight reckon.

Always a bridesmaid.......

Will be driving on the hiway tomorrow. I've already done the trans filter and added dr tranny anti shudder about two weeks ago. As well as Lucas something something.

First actual hiway trip since the shudder started. If it happens on the way to work ill pull the wires and see what happens.

The two downsides to unplugging it are reduced mpg & higher trans fluid temps. By not locking up, there will always be a small amount of slip, so you will not get the best mpg possible. Plus all that slip will increase the trans temp, but if you have an external cooler added it shouldn't be an issue. That is what I've heard, but if it's on the interweb, you know it's true...

Andrew nailed it. Ideally you want the TCC to lock up ASAP as this is what gives you the best mpg and power to the wheels. Though depending on your driving (stop and go etc.) it doesn't usually stay locked for very long. I think long highway drives where it would typically remain locked is where your higher temps will come into play. Unless you have a temp gauge (analog from the trans or digital through the OBD port) I would be very careful. Your nose will come in handy....my experience is you can always smell trans trouble.

I'd try it and if it works consider it a temporary fix. The TCC replacement is like a 4 hour job by yourself...maybe 2 with a buddy and the right tools....and flat ground.

Update.

After 600km on new filter and dr tranny, Lucas something, shudder has come back.

I don't like the way it feels so I pulled off the hiway and back-roaded it home.

I rather not run the risk of roasting a newish tranny. Po replaced at 180,000km, now has 230,000km. Obviously didn't replace the converter at the same time.

Darn. People that don't maintain their vehicles, piss me off.
