Amount of Fluid needed?

2002 AWD with deep pan

Before I start on filter/fluid change, how much fluid should I pick up?
(I have a issue with seeing the red on the stick )

4 to 5 quarts. Up grade to dex 7 maybe dex 5 can not remember, but worth the extra money to upgrade the fluid

Trans holds 11 qts. IIRC, external cooler another 1. If you drop the pan to change the filter you'll drain maybe 5 as king said. If you want to flush that's a whole new ball game.
I would change the filter, add a drain plug and an external cooler if you don't have one already. I would use the GM recommended trans fluid adding only 1 bottle Lucas trans fix, 2 if your having drivability issues. If it's leaking, find and fix the leak. With the drain plug you can drain and replace another 5 qts. after a thousand miles or so and your fluid will almost new.

Every time I have done a splash and fill (tranny pan and filter) I have used 4 quarts to refill, if the tranny was up to full

to begin with. Gage yours by that, and if you buy 5 qts you will have a quart for top offs down the road. (If needed)

I added in 5Q drove it for 50miles and had to add 2.5Q more. I did allow the tranmission to drip overnight (Pan/Filter off) and blew out the coolant lines (and flush).

When I drain the the catch pan it was almost at 7.5Q.
