What tranny type do I have?

Postby cosmoyogiman [OP] » May 12th 2009, 1:46am

Hi. I have a 1990 4.3 TBI 2wd. I need to know the tranny type (4L60E, 4L80E, other) so I will know what MIL code chart to look at. Thanks.

For the 1990 year it is a 700R4, or also called a 4L60.
Do not confuse it with the 4L60E (later model years) which is electronically controlled by the ECM.

No problem!
Just remember your van has OBD1, not OBD2 (1996 and later).

It is called On Board Diagnostics 1 v. On Board Diagnostics 2.

The first versions were basic and monitored just a few things, enough to aid basic troubleshooting. GM's version is called ADL.

The seconds version is JAE standardized and is very comprehensive in diagnostics, it can almost point you directly to a component failure.

You can do a google search on either OBD1 or OBD2 and probably find more info than you will EVER want to know!
