Overdrive power loss & code..

Overdrive power loss & code..

Postby AnimeImpact [OP] » June 4th 2009, 4:14am

I have a 96 RWD with 4L60E tranny. Has been doing great up until the other day. First thing I noticed was at highway speeds (65 - 75mph) was loss of my A/C (very noticeable in Texas) until I let off my throttle. Then it would come back. I don't know it is connected to what happened next though. While trying to get on the freeway I pushed the accelerator down and when I did the tranny instead of going into OD it started to slip. Top speed just under 60mph. Going over a local high bridge I got a similar reaction. I got a check engine code of P1870. The next day I changed my fluid and filter. Test drove on local roads with OK results. There was a little jerking every now and then. I rechecked fluid levels and proceeded with highway test. Same results as before filter and fluid change. Does anyone have any ideas before heading to the transmission shop?

Hello,

for the A/C problem, did you check the serpentine belt? Was there in loss in power from the engine or was the power loss restricted to only the a/c?

And when you had the problem with the OD slipping, was the engine revving up also? When you changed the fluid, how did it look and smell? Are there any leaks regarding the transmission?

Power loss only to A/C. Can't find any leaks. The fluid was dark red but not quite burnt brown when I changed it.

With your description of how the a/c worked and didn't work (while on the gas), it would either be the serpentine belt or the tensioner.

The slipping in the trans good just be caused by old trans fluid or a low fluid level. My trans in particular likes to be a pint over the full line otherwise it doesn't work quite right. Your problem could be other things but I don't have enough info.

AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
