Lost 3-4th gear in recon box, possible electronic fault

Lost 3-4th gear in recon box, possible electronic fault

Postby BulgarianAstro [OP] » February 9th 2015, 8:25pm

Hi, All,

I am new to AstroVans and have purchased a 1996 AWD DayVan conversion.

Was sold to me with a reconditioned gearbox fitted by previous owner, but done very little mileage since. Been sitting around for last 4-5 years since fitting, with a few other jobs done.

I've done about 100 miles in it and last night it lost 3-4 gear while running around town.

Have checked oil levels (topped up by 1/2 ltr) but no change (literally)

Wondering if an electronic fault may be the problem, perhaps connection or wire shaken loose over speed humps in town.

Any thoughts on what I should look for?

With gratitude
Andrew

Get under there and have a look-see. Could be as simple as adjusing the shift linkage or the TV (Detent) cable.

If you lost 3rd gear (and by default, 4th because it won't shift past 3rd) the trans is pretty much dead. The 3-4 clutches have incinerated themselves. You have my sympathies.

:crying-blue:

You can still drive it in manual 2nd without doing further damage. Just watch your engine RPM's. You can also use reverse without causing further damage as well.

How many miles are on the transmission?

If you drop the pan you'll see something like this:

AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
