Transmission Model Number

Transmission Model Number

Postby romeroom [OP] » May 3rd 2010, 1:42am

I have a 1995 Astro AWD. Where would I find the transmission model number stamped?

(Sorry if this is a stupid question. I did do a quick forum search and could not find an answer.)

I think your van has a 4L60E Transmission. Is this what you are asking? Jim

I found this too. Not mine. I borrowed it...

Tags are usually on the top of the bell housing. However, not all transmission had them, not all tags are still there, and not all tags are still readable.

There is a number stamped on the case pan rail about 8 characters long that includes ONE of the ID codes. It may be enough to ID the transmission.

If the 4th character is a 'D', you have a 4L60-E. If an 'M', you have a 700-R4, renamed by GM to 4L60.

Is there something wrong with your current tranny? That year tranny is only interchangable with another tranny from that year. '95 was a odd year were some parts are specific to that year only. :chevy:

AutomaticThe purpose of an Automatic Transmission is similar to that of a manual transmission, the auto tranny's primary duty is to allow the engine to operate in its narrow range of speeds while providing a wide range of output speeds.
