Quick NP136 transfer case question

Quick NP136 transfer case question

Postby jaywoo65 [OP] » February 24th 2015, 1:34am

I was out today in the snow and the front wheels aren't pulling. I checked the ATC fuse and it's good. When I turn on the ignition, the Service AWD light comes on and goes out like it's supposed to. It's not on any other time. So I figure what the heck, it might be the encoder motor. I had recently changed out the transfer case, the old one was making a bunch of noise when the AWD engaged. Basically I have two spare encoder motors. So, I decided to put in one of the others. Which leads me to my question:

When I put the front drive shaft back on, I am able to spin it and the transfer case freely (not hooked up to the front Diff yet - I was aligning it). I really don't remember if this was the case on the old transfer case or even if it should spin. Kinda seems like it should since the clutches aren't engaged to put it in AWD. But I could freely spin it.

Anyway, put the front driveshaft back on and took it out in the snow. Still no AWD and no service light. I need a SCAN tool I think. Or take it and have it checked. I was just wondering if anyone knew if it was supposed to spin. I should have kept the old transfer case that I swapped out.

If you aren't getting any errors, it be your clutch plates are worn. If you have changed encoders with no change, either you are getting no signal to the encoder (bad connection) or your clutch plates are toast. Check for signal and then go from there. The NP's have several failure points.

Your old one..did you diagnose why it failed? Noisy? Like Forks in a blender noisy?
How many sensors, fuses or computers does a Bw4472 need? Zero.

If it's engaging the tcase (you may need someone moving the van and you looking at the dtiveshaft) it's more than likely the actuator on the axle. They tend to get stuck from rust etc.
