Instrument panel problems

Instrument panel problems

Postby bpo [OP] » May 3rd 2019, 9:35pm

For a little while now, I've had intermittent cruise control issues: the cruise control would work, but then the "brake" red light and "ABS" yellow lights would appear and it would stop.

This was minorly annoying. However, last night, something more serious has happened: the fuel gauge & oil temperature gauges no longer work.

Additionally, I cannot see the drive selector or the odometer with the engine running (I can see both with the engine off & the ignition turned one position forward).

Any ideas? This is starting to concern me. I looked in the owner's manual and found "position 6" in the fuse underneath the steering column as maybe related? I pulled the fuse. It looked fine, but I replaced it anyway. No effect.

Any suggestions? I am a bit out of my depth here, so I appreciate even simple suggestions, especially if well-explained.

Oh, also the side power mirrors do not work. I kind of assumed it was the switch, bought a spare and have been meaning to swap it. Maybe unrelated, but maybe a clue to just general electrical issues?

Thank you! I am only a recent owner - opportunity to buy kind of fell in my lap & I jumped on it as a 2nd car, but I'm not sure how qualified to own this I am exactly. I've enjoyed owning it (other than this issue).

Sounds like a bad ground(s) and/or connections somewhere. I would start testing/cleaning/tightening them first. Grab the GM Techline eSI(link in my sig) as it will have all of the wiring diagrams and ground locations for you.

Turned the climate control to "off", and the instrument panel came back!

This would further point to a bad ground somewhere I believe, correct?

I will work on cleaning those first & see what I find.
