Battery good, alternator new, not charging

Battery good, alternator new, not charging

Postby sonomaguy [OP] » June 4th 2019, 1:50am

I was driving home the other day and when I looked down and noticed the alternator was only charging the battery at about 9 V I slow down for about 10 minutes as I was behind a grader at which point I noticed it was charging at 14 V again then. As I got to my destination I noticed it was back down around 9 V and on my way home it had dropped down almost into the red. I took the battery in it and got it checked out as it was only a-year-old and they said it was still good to 800 CCA. The only other thing I thought it could be would be the alternator so I picked up a rebuilt alternator put that in and it is still charging poorly to the point where it died on me on the way home I put my spare battery in there that I had just been using in the other vehicle and it still wasn’t charging that good so doesn’t appear to be battery or alternator. Any other ideas what it could possibly be? I am really puzzled at this point I’m not sure which way to turn any thoughts would be great thanks

Its a principal of mechanics. Replacing a component does not rule it out as defective. Could be the regulator in the alternator? Maybe if you could test the voltage as it exits the alternator.

Check the wire ing, especially the primary charge wire, the one that bolts on.

Is the Voltage gauge on the dash board the only one you have used so far? Maybe the gauge or wiring to it is faulty and the battery and alternator are not having any problem at all. I suggest measuring the voltage with a trusted meter directly across the battery terminals and also directly at the alternator output. And check all connectors and fuses associated with the charging system.

Agreed. Check the alternator output directly. Do not forget about the alternator bracket, it supports the alternator and grounds the alternator. I did the big 3 upgrade and never looked back.

Definitely check the wiring going from the starter up to the alternator, it contains a fusible link.

Trolls take away from productive work, best to starve the troll of attention by ignoring it and going about your business.
