Best battery

Re: Best battery

Postby Rod's Trucks » May 3rd 2020, 10:17pm

Rinny,
What you are describing, is only to measure DC volts.
I doubt your multimeter (DMM) will measure DC amps, at any level above maybe 10 amps.
I have never seen a DC Ammeter that will measure anything over 10-15 amps except highly specialized meters, and even usually that requires plugging the probes into different terminals on the meter.
An Ammeter goes in series with the wire, unless it is an inductive ( ClampOn).
With anything but an inductive meter, you have to disconnect the cable connection and insert the meter leads back in that open circuit. For anything over a few amps most test leads are not capable of handling the current (Amps) thata are to be measured.
May years ago, many vehicles had an AMP meter on the dashboard. That was wired with 8 or 10 ga. wire and showed what was flowing either into, or out of the battery. When automotive systems began using a lot more power for accessories etc.; it became somewhat impractical to route a wire large enough to handle all that current through the dashboard, so they did away with dash mounted AMP meters and some began installing a VOLTMETER. That is what we have in our vans ( although I suspect from my measurements, I think they are all rather inaccurate).
They work for their intended purpose. They measure the system voltage. If the alternator fails to keep tha battery charged, the indicated voltage will dip down towards 12 volts. If it is charging the system properly, the indicated voltage will be up closer to the 14 volt mark.
Knowing where your particular meter normally registers, with the motor running, and with few accessories turned on, is a good reference. Also knowing what the meter reads when the key is first turned on, but the motor not yet started, give you a good idea of how ell the battery holds a charge, particularly after sitting for an extended period of time.
An old "Rule of Thumb" for a rough determination of an acceptable alternator output, is to measure the battery voltage while at rest, and then start the motor. The voltage should increase by a couple of volts. The only way the voltage can increase is if the alternator is charging, so that proves it is working at lest to some extent. It will not tell you how much the alternator CAN produce, because ( As Mmusicman so ably stated: ...it will only produce what the system will accept...,) at the voltage the internal regulator is set.

Thank you for an articulate and pretty complete answer. I already have the new alternator coming. I will rewire as specified by the company. Just have to decide on the best battery for my application. Leaning towards the redtop 800cca 34/78 I think it is.

IMHO: A bit overkill; but it is your project and your money, and it should work fine for you. Be sure to use a very heavy cables and logs, from the alternator through all the connections to the battery and ground. Enjoy it!

I would like to see a couple of pictures of the rig and the engine compartment some time; or maybe they are posted some place here.

Rinny,
Thanks for the engine compartment pic ( looks very 'full'; and the link to your build.
I had previously read the parts of the build thread after the motor was actually in and running.
Even after that point, your descriptions, pic's and narrative was time consuming and enlightening.
A very impressive job, with excellent workmanship and attention to detail. I am particularly jealous of the job you did on the bumpers.
Did it ever get to 'go fishing'?

There were many twists and turns in that build thread It was my first endeavor into anything like that. I have plenty of shade tree mechanicing behind me but nothing like that.
Yes that is why I built it, to fish out of it. I have put about 35,000 miles on the build and it does well, still improving though. I will put up a pic of the security screening at some point I think you might find it interesting.

did you have to modify any of the stock brackets and such to install that ? I am asking because we recently bought a ford e350 to drive across country and I may wish to do some upgrading to the battery/alternator system for the trip so we can plug trip stuff in such as electric cooler cell phones, etc.

It bolted rite up. Had to upgrade the wiring and install a dedicated ground. You might have to change the belt depending on how high of an amperage you go. The higher ones use a smaller pully to get more RPM's. The one I have is a 250 amp.

Do not recognize that company, but i have seen so many fly by nite hi output alternator companies come and go, the last 30 years. Most people shall never need one.Yes,i have one, on my camper truck, but did die after some years, but all electrical dies.Has been repaired.Super high output came about because of the huge sound systems, and the competition.Of course they fail to mention you need a idle/throttle control, to run up the RPM's.250 amp is not that big, anymore, probably a good choice, but probably not even necessary, unless you have 4-5 batteries, and/or are powering a huge sound system.I think you will be fine, but carry an extra belt, tensioner and idler pulleys in your van.Oh, it shall also put quite a bit bigger load on the A/c pulley bearing.
